NEW AUTHORS, Listen there is no elevator to success in the publishing industry or any other industry for that matter. Personally, Ive only dropped one novel. Nevertheless, it only takes one to learned the dynamics of the publishing business firsthand. More Importantly, my track record as a successful business man exceeds my writing career by a quarter of a century. :-) The Urban Genre Industry like most Black organiggazations is a very clique oriented or fraternal business, Spoken and unspoken. So it’s imperative that you understand its hierarchy. There are those so called ELITE AUTHORS who believe that they are entitled, to govern an industry based on solely their respective longevity in the publishing business. These particular Authors remind me of the old hustlers on the block, knocking a young hustler grind ,talking about he ain t pay his dues.GTFOH!!! Dont get me wrong, no self-respecting business man will ever neglect or eradicate the contributions of his or her Predecessors in any particular field or business endeavor. However, many of these alleged Publishing C.E.O.’S are much better writers than they are at promoting and marketing of books. Most NEWBIES upon entering this particular genre are led to believe that by signing with an established reputable Author under his or her brand will ensure instant success and recognition amongst readers. Unfortunately, this is an illusion. I mean really ask yourself how much it would cost to properly promote and market a novel in all the major U.S. Cities. At a minimum let’s say hundreds of thousands of dollars to do this simultaneously in major urban markets to include print, radio, television, and social media. So realistically, when you sign with an independent publisher other than his or her limited Facebook clique what other exposure can he/she can assure you? Who is to say that he or she particular readers will resonate with your particular style or subject matter. I’ve personally sat back and observed amazon algorithms in relation to new author release under some of these allege Street lit Powerhouses. And in most cases I haven’t seen any sign author book sales surpassed that of the Signing author. Nor do they sustained the same endurance as far as sales over the long haul. However, if you are in the publishing business for social acceptance this would probably be the move for you. On the contrary, if you are in the Publishing business to sell books, I’d advise you to sit down and devise you a well thought out marketing and promotion plan. The key is to establish your own readership, make sacrifices to invest in your brand. If you can sell one novel to one satisfied reader, you can sell a million copies. Books don’t go stale. Establish your brand and its worth. Whomever you wrote your novel to resonate with exist in all four corners of the globe. It’s your duty as an entrepreneur to figure out a strategy to get your product to consumers. Dropping novels back to back without saturating the market to reap the full financial reward is absurd in terms of business. Business is a about investment and profits. The salability of your book is totally determine by the marketing and promotion. A well selling book doesnt always imply a well written story. Your longevity in the publishing business is solely determine by your writing talent to deliver great stories to the consumers, which in our market is readers. Readers can’t buy your book if they don’t know that it exist. Unfortunately, that principle doesn’t always apply in street literature because of the fascist mentally that exist between some readers/author and groups relationship. The world is your reading audience, write novels that entice people that normally wouldn’t read to read. Contrary to popular belief, most of the C.E.O.s to these publishing houses work nine to five jobs. The others don’t even own the rights to most of their work and /are indebted to their Major publishers. Like any industry, everything that glitter ain’t gold. Networking, socializing is great if it’s conducive to business and taking your career to the next level. Hobnobbing and sacrificing your hard work for the sake of being Facebook famous is like being monopoly rich. C.E.O. Alphonso Irving Hollyhood Publisher
