NEW CINEMA RELEASES Boxing Day brings us five new movies to check out - are you heading to the cinema today? TOP PICK Believe it or not, the top pick to see this week is ST VINCENT, a comedy drama starring Bill Murray, Melissa McCarthy, and Naomi Watts, in which A young boy whose parents have just divorced finds an unlikely friend and mentor in the misanthropic, bawdy, hedonistic war veteran who lives next door. Probably not for the kids given that USA Today’s Claudia Puig says it’s A film in which precocious kids say things real kids never would, and larcenous drunks come off as adorable. OTHERS TO SEE THE WATER DIVINER finally arrives on our screens. An Australian man travels to Turkey after the Battle of Gallipoli to try and locate his three missing sons. It’s Russell Crowe’s directorial debut. I saw this at a pre-screening and will post my review soon. It’s a solidly entertaining move, despite its few flaws. MAYBE/MAYBE NOT You may have thought the new Hobbit movie, THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES would be a definite winner. But general viewers and critics disagree on this one. Bilbo and Company are forced to engage in a war against an array of combatants and keep the Lonely Mountain from falling into the hands of a rising darkness. According to CineVues Joe Walsh, Jacksons efforts have peaked and troughed, but this final chapter will undoubtedly satisfy fans, and kindle a sense of sadness as this hobbits tale finally draws to a close.’ I’m seeing it with family this afternoon, so will let you know how it goes. Yet another episode in the Night at the Museum franchise: NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: SECRET OF THE TOMB with Ben Stiller, Robin Wiliams and Owen Wilson are at the helm as Larry spans the globe, uniting favorite and new characters while embarking on an epic quest to save the magic before it is gone forever. New York Posts Sara Stewart suggests that, For piquing kids interest in history and nature, you could do worse than this goofy Ben Stiller franchise. But its third installment is more meh than manic, too reliant on wide shots of the ragtag Museum of Natural History cohorts striding down corridors. You get the feeling returning director Shawn Levy is ready to hang it up. ONE TO AVOID Finally, I’m going completely against the opinion of most critics who consider MR TURNER to be a great movie. It is an exploration of the last quarter century of the great, if eccentric, British painter J.M.W. Turners life. I have already seen this and will post my review shortly. For me, it was a totally boring waste of nearly two and a half hours! But, according to The Guardians Peter Bradshaw What a glorious film this is, richly and immediately enjoyable, hitting its satisfying stride straight away. Its funny and visually immaculate; it combines domestic intimacy with an epic sweep and has a lyrical, mysterious quality that perfumes every scene, whether tragic or comic.’ If you believe that, go see it. Otherwise, wait until I review it. That’s it for this week. See you at the movies! * Movie synopses are based on/adapted from IMDB. Opinions are mine except where references are provided.
