NEW COIN RELEASED -60 year of India Government Mint, Kolkata -1952-2012″ Diamond Jubilee Celebration of India Government Mint, Kolkata -1952-2012 - Rs. 60 & Rs. 5 India Government Mint, Kolkata, a unit of Security Printing & Minting Corporation of India Ltd. (SPMCIL) celebrated its Diamond Jubilee Celebration on 31-03-2012 at Alipore, Kolkata. Shri Pranab Mukherjee, Hon’ble Union Minister of Finance was the Chief Guest at the programme which was presided over by Dr. Amit Mitra, Hon’ble Minister Incharge, Finance & Excise, Government of West Bengal. Janab Firhad Hakim, Minster In charge, Municipal Affairs and Urban Development, Government of West Bengal and Shri Subrata Bakshi, Member of Parliament, Kolkata Dakshin were the guests of honour at the programme. The programme was also attended by Sh. Bimal Julka, Additional Secretary & Director General, Directorate of Currency, Ministry of Finance and other dignitaries apart from Sh. M. S. Rana, CMD, Directors of the Company, GMs of all the nine Units and employees of the Company. About Kolkatta Mint: According to available records the Kolkata Mint was established in 1759-60. At that time it was known as Murshidabad Mint. In 1790 a second Mint was established at the site of Gillet Ship building. On March, 1824 the foundation of 3rd Calcutta Mint was laid on the strand road. Apart from minting of coins another important function of the Kolkata Mint was manufacturing of Medals and decorating during British regime, which is still continuing. In the late 1930’s it was decided to build a new Mint at Alipore and the foundation work had been completed by early 1942. But due to 2nd World War the construction was interrupted. Later on Alipore Mint was opened by the then Hon’ble Union Finance Minster, Shri C.D. Deshmukh on 19th March, 1952. Besides coinage production, Kolkata Mint has produced different commemorative coins for last six decades. During recent years India Govt. mint, Kolkata has produced several commemorative coins on various themes like 150th Birth Anniversary of Shri Rabindra Nath Tagore, Mother Teresa Birth Centenary, Commonwealth Games, 150 years of Income Tax in India, 150 years of Comptroller & Auditor General of India etc. This Mint has also been producing medals of various types like the highest civilian medals like Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhusan, Padmashri, Gallantry medals like Paramvir chakra, Mahavir chakra, Vir chakra Sena medals for Defence, Medals for Ministry of Home Affairs,Commonwealth Games, Educational Institutions, Social Services etc. Productions of Medallions for National and International Film festivals are also the pride of Kolkata Mint. Kolkata Mint has increased its production to ever highest of about 1600 million pieces in 2010-11 against an average of 600 million pieces before corporitisation in 2006. The profitability per employee in Kolkata Mint has increased by 116% during the last five years. About SPMCIL; Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Ltd. (SPMCIL) is a Mini-ratna Category-I CPSE, wholly owned Schedule ‘A’ Company of Govt. of India. It is engaged in the minting of coins, printing of currency notes, passport and allied travel documents, postal stationery, nonjudicial stamp papers etc. The company was incorporated in the year 2006 after corporatization of nine units functioning under the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Government of India. The performance of the corporation in terms of production, turnover, profitability and physical parameters has improved significantly over the last five years. The Company has achieved ever highest production of coins and bank notes of 6 and 7 billion pieces respectively and highest gross income of Rs. 3416 crores and highest profit of Rs. 577 crores in FY 2010-11 despite constant selling prices of coins and bank notes since 2007-08. The Company has accumulated the reserves of Rs. 1923 crores as on 31-03-2011 after paying maiden dividend to the Government for Rs. 115.44 crores, which is equivalent to 20% of its post tax profits for FY 2010-11. SPMCIL has paid back about Rs. 1100 crores of loans of RBI & MoF, is a debt free Company and today stands as the successful example of Corporatization of erstwhile Government Units. In order to give thrust to modernizations and indigenization, SPMCIL has Capex Plan of approx. Rs. 2500 crore from 2009-10 to 2014-15. Company has already carried out major modernizations of Mints by introducing stateof-the-art coining presses, coin blank manufacturing lines and finishing & packaging lines costing about Rs. 250 crores. As part of modernization of Currency Printing Presses, one line of Currency Printing machine at Bank Note Press, Dewas has been commissioned which was inaugurated by Hon’ble Union Finance Minster at BNP, Dewas on 7th January, 2012. As a measure of indigenization, foundation stone of a new bank note paper line at SPM, Hoshangabad was laid by the Hon’ble Union Finance Minister at Hoshangabad on 17th December, 2011.
