NEW DIRECTIVE “Then the Philistines went up once again and deployed themselves in the Valley of Rephaim” 2 Samuel 5:22 As soon as David was anointed king over the entire tribes of Israel the Philistines rose up in arm against him. Here we learn an important principle from the kingdom of darkness, that whenever a faithful is promoted there is disquiet in their ranks. The good news is that God who organized the promotion in the first place is on hand to defend His elect. David made inquiry from the Lord concerning the enemy’s threat, and he got the assurance of divine backing. He beat the Philistines in that round. The text before us lends us another lesson on how the powers of darkness operate. The Philistines went up once again to battle with David, indicating that the enemy will not concede victory to a child of God easily. That’s why in spiritual battle believers must be prepared for the long haul. Again, David enquired of the Lord concerning that attack. David did not rely on the previous victory. He did not say it was the same enemy and the same old approach would suffice. Had he done that he would have fallen into presumption and suffered defeat. God gave him a different strategy, which gave him comprehensive victory. As we hinted yesterday, one way to avoid falling into presumption is to make enquiries from God all the time.
