NEW FEDERAL FISCAL YEAR STARTS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 1. The USDA, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) hasnt received its budget for fiscal year 2015 yet, but they will be accepting applications for the wildlife funding pool in the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), a program that shares the cost of establishing and managing wildlife habitat. In the 2014 Farm Bill, there was a stipulation that 5% of the EQIP funds must be dedicated to wildlife. This is a use it or lose it proposition. If Virginia NRCS does not use their allocated funds by a certain date, they will be sent to another state that can use the funds. There will be deadlines in the future for ranking applications and selecting some for funding. When you apply for financial assistance, NRCS will be contacting your local private lands biologist to help you develop a wildlife habitat management plan if you do not have one already.
