NEW MEANING TO AN OLD SONGS LYRICS Lynyrd Skynyrds classic That Smell was released on their Street Survivors LP back when I was a junior in high school. A few years later, when I was a lowly enlisted man in the Air Force, a practical joke I played on an officer came to be associated in my mind with this tune. Three decades ago, I used to operate and maintain the F-15 flight simulator at Holloman Air Force Base, near Alamogordo, New Mexico. One morning, I came in to work to find the simulator in use, bobbing and dipping on its hydraulic motion system as the pilot inside battled multiple simulated enemies. As always when the motion system was in use, the cockpit canopy was down and the pilot was in full flight gear, including a face mask attached to an intake pump below the sim. Whos in the box? I asked my colleague who was manning the console that controlled the tactics of the simulated enemy planes. He told me the pilots name. It was a total jerk that even the other pilots didnt like. I went over to the air supply intake vent and let rip a particularly aromatic mixture of the previous nights beer and that mornings eggs, then returned to the console. Suddenly, the pilots voice, muffled by his face mask, came over the intercom. Oh my God! What the hell is that stench? Seconds later, an alarm bell rang out, the motion system jumped to neutral position, and the cockpit canopy flew open in a simulated ejection to reveal the pilot hastily scrambling to remove his face mask. All this was accompanied by the sweet sounds of him gagging and choking into the mike inside his headset. My friend and I at the console played innocent, of course. The pilot wrote up the air supply as defective and left the building in a huff. We assured him we would repair the malfunction, then quietly pencil-whipped it as unable to reproduce.
