NEW ON CHILDMIND.ORG October 14, 2014 How ADHD Girls Can Succeed, Anti-Phone First Graders, and Acing the Parent Teacher Conference When girls are diagnosed with ADHD, chances are theyve been in distress for quite a while. Ashamed to be struggling in school or disappointing their parents, they often go to great lengths to hide their pain. Since their ADHD doesnt fit the stereotypes, its often not recognized, and they tend to get criticism and pressure, not help. In the third part of our series about girls with ADHD, the writer’s father acknowledges how hard it is to be supportive when you dont know whats wrong: “It was invisible. It seemed like you should be doing fine but were screwing up, and I didn’t know what it was about. That made it very hard to get on your side.” This week Rae Jacobson writes about how parents can help daughters with ADHD. She’s not talking here about the standard treatment all kids with ADHD may benefit from—including medication and organizational help—but help especially relevant to girls.
