NEW ORLEANS / НОВЫЙ ОРЛЕАН I noticed that sometimes when you are impressed with something or somebody too much, it’s difficult to write about this. You are sort of afraid not to be able to express properly what you feel, afraid of missing anything. Such thing happened to me with regard to New Orleans. I visited this city more than a month ago already, I often thought about it and remembered, but only now got myself together to write. I am glad that I reached New Orleans almost at the end of my USA leg when I’ve passed and seen a lot. It gives me the right to say with confidence, this city is different. Well, I will try to explain now what I mean, there’ll be many words and emotions, but still I will not find better description that this: “this city is different”. One of the most amazing facts I’ve learned about it is that New Orleans has the highest percentage of people who lived here for all their lives – from cradle to grave. As if a sort of magnet is implanted into person during birth, and it does not let go or pulls back. I was very lucky to stay with the lady who was born in New Orleans. Terry is in love with her city and cannot see herself in any other place on Earth. When Katrina hurricane happened and she had to leave the city for a while, she came back with the first possibility. She talks about that time with pride and pain… it revealed the best in people, likewise it brought to the surface the worst.. But the city survived, the city revived. And now the lily of New Orleans is the symbol of revival, this is the history which united people even stronger and for longer, forever. They call this city Big Easy. All is easy and natural here, without haste and compulsion. Borders between the opposites are being washed away, unthinkable things are amazingly combined and matched: both holiness and licentiousness, virtue and vice, freedom and feeling of danger. You can find and see anything you want here. Amazing combination of cultures, languages, races, tastes, manners. One of the most important, or may be most important, sides of New Orleans is music. Music and New Orleans seem like interchangeable notions. I’ll say only one thing – for the first time in my life I stood on the street leaning a street pillar listening to street musicians and not able to move on. Terry and Doug showed me real New Orleans with all its atmosphere and charm. I’ve seen it through their eyes, and my impression is the same bright and strong after one month as it was before. The day I was about to leave, we randomly started to talk with Terry about life. What she told me was so extraordinary and wonderful, and so in line with what I felt and what I needed, that I could not hold back my tears. These were the words of a woman who has seen and passed through a lot in life, and still she loves life and appreciates everything it gives and takes. This city and people there are embodiment of thirst for life, strength and freedom of spirit, life itself which is able and will revive and revive again for whatever it takes. They are different. Ты как бы боишься не смочь выразить словами то, что чувствуешь, боишься упустить что-то, не досказать. Примерно это произошло со мной по отношению к Новому Орлеану. В этом городе я побывала уже около месяца назад, я часто думала о нем и вспоминала, и только сейчас собралась написать. Я рада, что оказалась в нем почти в самом конце моего пути по США, когда уже многое было пройдено и увидено. Это дает мне право уверенно сказать, этот город – другой. Вот понимаете..я сейчас начну объяснять, что я имею ввиду, будет много слов и эмоций, но лучшего описания для него я все равно не найду, чем «он-другой». Один из самых удивительных фактов, который я узнала о нем: в Новом Орлеане самый высокий процент жителей, которые родились в этом городе и здесь же и умерли. Как будто при рождении в человека вживляется магнит, который не отпускает далеко или притягивает обратно. Большой удачей для меня было остановиться в доме у женщины, которая родилась в Новом Орлеане. Терри влюблена в этот город и не представляет себя где-либо в другом месте. Когда случился ураган Катрина и ей пришлось покинуть город, она вернулась обратно при первой же возможности. Она с гордостью и болью рассказывает о том времени.. оно раскрыло самое лучшее в людях, равно как и подняло на поверхность худшее. Но город выжил, город возродился. И сейчас лилия Нового Орлеана – это символ возрождения, это история, которая соединила людей еще крепче и еще надольше, навечно. Этот город называют Большим Легким. Здесь все легко и непринужденно, грани между противоположностями размываются, здесь удивительным образом сочетаются немыслимые вещи: святость и разнузданность, порок и добродетель, свобода и ощущение опасности. Здесь можно найти и увидеть все, что угодно, на любой вкус и цвет. Удивительное сочетание культур, языков, рас, нравов. Одна из важных, а может, и самая важная составляющая Нового Орлеана – это музыка. Музыка и Новый Орлеан – взаимозаменяемые слова – синонимы. Скажу только одно – впервые в своей жизни я стояла два часа на улице, оперевшись об уличный столб, не в состоянии оторваться от простых уличных музыкантов. Терри и Даг показали мне настоящий Новый Орлеан, я увидела его их глазами, и на меня он произвел впечатление, которое спустя месяц по яркости остается таким же, как и тогда. В день, когда я уезжала, мы заговорили с Терри о жизни. То, о чем она говорила, было настолько необычно и прекрасно, и настолько то, что мне нужно было в тот момент, что я не могла сдержать слез. Это говорила женщина, которая увидела и пережила многое, которая любит жизнь такой, какая она есть, и принимает от нее все с благодарностью. Этот город и люди в нем – олицетворение жажды жизни, силы и свободы духа, самой жизни, которая способна и будет возрождаться снова и снова, что бы ни произошло. Они – другие.
