NEW SCHEME TO COMBAT SHEFFIELD CHILDRENS ALLERGIES A project improve diagnosis and treatment of allergies is aiming to help children in Sheffield stay out of hospital. The Itchy, Sneezy, Wheezy scheme sees allergy specialists from Sheffield Children’s Hospital share their expertise with GPs, community health workers and other primary care providers at a weekly clinic in Norfolk Park. The team, which consists of a paediatrician, dietitian and nurses, is aiming to improve the quality of life for youngsters with conditions such as asthma, eczema, hay fever and food allergies. Dr Nicola Jay, allergy consultant at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, said: “Over the last ten years we have seen a significant rise in allergies amongst children. “We want to show that by going out onto the frontline we can increase understanding of these conditions amongst healthcare professionals, parents and children. This will lead to improved diagnosis, more effective treatment plans and better outcomes for those affected.” The scheme, which is due to run for the next seven months, is an extension of a pilot at St Mary’s Hospital in London, which saw a reduction in allergy related admissions amongst children to casualty units.
