NEW STUDY FROM MY COLLABORATORS AND ME: STRESS BEFORE CONCEPTION BUT NOT DURING PREGNANCY INCREASES RISK FOR INFANT MORTALITY Maternal Stress and Infant Mortality; The Importance of the Preconception Period by Quetzal Class et al in current issue of Psychological Science Severe psychological stress to the mother before she gets pregnant (preconception) and stress during pregnancy before birth of her child (prenatal) is associated with adverse outcomes during birth and childhood. However, until now, the relation of such severe stress (measured as death of a parent, sibling, spouse or other child) on infant mortality has remained uncertain. In this large population study, preconception stress increased the risk of infant mortality independently of measured covariates. In contrast, prenatal stress did not increase risk of infant mortality. This suggests that the period immediately before conception may be a sensitive developmental period with ramifications for infant mortality risk. pss.sagepub/content/early/2013/05/07/0956797612468010.abstract
