NEW TUESDAYS! Record of the week: The Walker Brothers- Nite Flights- Tizona SIXTH STUDIO ALBUM, GOTHY ART-POP MEETS DARK ENO-ESQUE DISCO.Originally released in 1978 and includes the single ‘The Electrician’ plus the much loved title track etc etc.The album was to be the group’s last together . Each member of the group wrote songs for the album, two were by Gary Walker while Scott Walker and John Walker each contributed four. The album was recorded in February 1978 in the UK at Scorpio Sound, London and received positive reviews, specifically for Scott’s work. The artwork was designed by Hipgnosis both the artwork and the audio have been redone by Todd Rittmann (Dead Rider). “So far, this has been a one-way tale: Bowie watching, interpreting, coveting, acquiring Walker. Now Walker, at last, was listening to Bowie, sifting through Station to Station, Low and especially the just-released “Heroes,” which Walker brought to the studio, playing it for his partners and the studio musicians (he also wanted everyone to subscribe to Gramophone magazine). The engineer Steve Parker told Anthony Reynolds that “Heroes” was “the reference album when we were making Nite Flights…we could have been more adventurous, maybe. If we’d had an Eno character in there, it would have been even more stunning, I think.” - Bowiesongs Xiu Xiu- Angel Guts: Red Classroom- Bella Union Ltd LP on transparent yellow vinyl. Includes a copy of the CD. The impulse that drove artists such as Suicide, Einstürzende Neubauten and Scott Walker to embark on extraordinary and uncompromising journeys, refusing to flinch in the face of humanity’s ugly truths and terrible beauty, also underpins the sound and vision of Xiu Xiu, aka LAbased duo Jamie Stewart and Angela Seo. ‘Angel Guts: Red Classroom’ is the sound of Xiu Xiu’s descent into the deepest blackness endurable. Young Fathers- DEAD- Big Dada Includes MP3. Young Fathers, the Edinburgh based trio of Liberian, Nigerian and Scottish heritage, make the kind of uncompromisingly leftfield, forward thinking hip hop that has nothing to do with artiness and everything to do with brilliance. Exactly the sort of music that Big Dada was founded to release. Following on from the widely acclaimed EPs ‘TAPE ONE’ and ‘TAPE TWO’ (Anticon), Big Dada / Anticon release Young Fathers’ debut album ‘DEAD’. The Family Rain- Under The Volcano- Virgin ‘Nearly a year since their rapturous home demo ‘Trust Me… I’m A Genius’ started pricking the ears of tastemakers and industry alike, The Family Rain are pleased to announce details of their debut album, Under The Volcano, recorded over four weeks at Berlin’s famed Hansa Studios with Jim Abbiss (Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys). It’s ten tracks of primal rock ‘n roll. From barnstorming singles such as the track ‘Feel Better (Frank)’, the crunching ‘Reason To Die’, and high octane belter ‘Pushing It’ - which led the band’s first EP earlier this year - the noise and intensity of this record could only be produced by three brothers who know each other inside out. Nagging melodies combine with heavy, metallic riffs to produce a searing rock record of intelligence and wit. The Family Rain have spent the past 12 months relentlessly touring the UK and Europe, winning over legions of new fans wherever they play. An firm favourite at Reading and Leeds Festival this year, the band recently wrapped up an extensive UK tour with Miles Kane and went on tour with Jake Bugg. “Three bearded brothers playing blues-infused rock, it’s no wonder the comparisons with the Kings Of Leon are coming thick and fast.” BBC Introducing. Henry Blacker- Hungry Dogs Will Eat Dirty Puddings- Riot Season Limited edition 250 LP pressed on 140gm classic black pure virgin vinyl, 350gsm printed outer sleeve, 3mm spine with paper inner. HENRY BLACKER are a rock band, a three piece, two from the group HEY COLOSSUS and a brother on the drums. These are the times they thought, let’s: WHOOP AND A HOLLER. Recorded August 2013 by Westminster Brown (Tim Cedar, Part Chimp) at the legendary Dropout studios, South London whilst a man from Torche watched on. ”Finally England provides a credible power trio. Fans of 70’s heavy boogie will love it, but it’ll also appeal to folk that dig Clint Foetus, Rapeman, Kyuss, Uncle Acid, Melvins, QOTSA/Desert Sessions. One of the (many) things I like about Hey Colossus (with whom Henry Blacker share two members) is their unrepentant Rockist streak, and boy is that made manifest on this offshoot. The album starts with a riff that would sit quite happily on Grand Funk’s ‘Blues for the Red Sun’ or ZZ’s classic ‘Deguello’ albums, but within seconds the Henry Blacker English Power-Boogie identity is patented. Some of the vocals treatments are classic Billy Gibbons (the Manic Mechanic sprang to mind) meets early QOTSA era Josh Homme. This is the album that the maniac in the monster truck is playing as he triesto mow you down in a 70’s drive-in movie. It’s the album Kowalski is playing to keep his drug and fatigue-addled mind alive as he heads for the Vanishing Point.” (Toby Mearing). Cremator – Clear Air Turbulence – Bronzerat (London one man synth geek Matt Thompson (Zoltan, Guapo) takes you on a sci-fi tune fest ala John Carpenter meets Kraftwerk.) Mark McGuire – Along The Way – Dead Oceans (2 x LP - Mark McGuire was previously a member of the critically acclaimed drone band Emeralds) Bombay Bicycle Club – So Long, See You Tomorrow – Island (So Long, See You Tomorrow is the band’s 4th studio album and has been produced by band member Jack Steadman in their London based studio, making it their most personal album to date and has already received a great deal of praise and critical acclaim across all media for its original sound) Augustines – Augustines – Votiv (Co-produced by Peter Katis, (The National, Frightened Rabbit, Interpol, Jonsi) “Augustines” marks a milestone on an amazing journey that has seen the band move forward from the immense tragedies that were expressed on their emotional debut) Helm – Impasse – New Images (Impasse is a sideways journey into the archives of London based artist Luke Younger, a.k.a. Helm. Conceived six years ago in the wake of a Birds of Delay tour, the album originally saw the light of day in an abridged version as a mini-CDR on the Low Point label in 2008. This remastered and expanded reissue has the two original tracks along with two others from the same sessions that remained unmixed until a couple of years ago) Rory Scovel – Live At Third Man Records – Third Man Records (“A few months back, we hosted one of our favourite comedians in the Third Man Blue Room, hand selected by Jack White to appear. Rory Scovel came, saw and destroyed any and all bad vibes within a 5 mile radius with an improv set of some of the best live stand up we’ve seen in years”. – Third Man Records)
