NEW WINESKINS IS 40! Rt. Rev. John H Rodgers Jr. Th.D.: I was introduced to contemporary global missions in the mid-70s in a workshop by Walter and Louise Hannum. It was held in St. John’s Episcopal Church in Glen Carlyn, VA. It was a message that hit us out of the blue. There really was a great need for our participation in sharing the Gospel around the world and congregations had a vital role to play. This contradicted the general opinion in those days that the day of global missions was over. We were not to try to replace local religions and local leadership by our Faith and over-zealous American help. We were neither needed not wanted overseas, or so we thought. How false and unbiblical that common attitude was. Walter and Louise opened our eyes. Who but Walter and Louise and the Episcopal Church Missionary Community (ECMC—now New Wineskins) was speaking this word of truth into the Episcopal Church at that time. No one else. In 1990 ECMC/New Wineskins moved from California to Ambridge, PA to offer courses in Missions for laity and for students at Trinity School for Ministry. I was blessed to have a role in those classes. It kept missions alive in our awareness. New Wineskins has remained in Ambridge and is a continuing blessing to Trinity and the entire area, as they continue their work locally and around the country and around the world.. I have had the privilege of serving on the Board of New Wineskins and have attended all but one of the tremendous conferences on global Missions that New Wineskins organizes every three years. It is the premiere’ conference on Missions in the entire, world-wide Anglican Communion. Incidentally, Trinity cancels classes so that the entire student body and faculty can attend those conferences. In short, I can say that New Wineskins has profoundly opened my heart and mind to global missions and has also helped Trinity School for Ministry come to regard itself as a Great Commission seminary. —JHR Here is the link to the tremendous Bible teaching Bp.
