NEW YEAR CHALLENGE: I have been following with keen interest as former legislator and now opposition MDC-T spokesperson, barrister Obert Gutu, expresses his opinion – or outrage! - on Zimbabwe’s future elections. He points out that – and I agree – ZANU.PF has ‘never’ won an election since year 2000 because – inter alia – the ‘electoral field is tipped in Robert Mugabe’s favour’. Mr. Gutu insists – of late – that MDC-T will ‘never’ participate in any election ‘until the electoral playing field is level’. Agreed, but … I am challenging Mr. Gutu to outline the five most important requirements of a truly free and fair election i.e. level field that will make his party participate. In addition, I beg him to explain to progressive Zimbabweans HOW his party, MDC-T, will ‘enforce’ these conditions and finally, what his party will do if Robert Mugabe ignores or simply indulges in ‘cosmetic’ reforms and gets on with elections WITHOUT MDC-T. I will then check with other electoral law ‘experts’ like Joshua Tshuma, Jessie Majome, Alex Magaisa and Rindai Chitsinde-Vava if Obert Gutu’s ‘five point plan’ will ever see the light of day before publishing the analysis on this wall.
