JOYA-E CANDLELIGHT SERVICE — At 11:00 p.m., we will have our last service of 2014, the perfect moment to reflect upon the past year in gratitude for Amida’s Unconditional Compassion, and to welcome the new year with appreciation of every moment of this unrepeatable life. BONG THE GONG! = Joya no Kane — Following the service, everyone is invited to ring the kansho Temple Bell. The kansho is rung 108 times to remind us of the 108 “bonno” blind passions that bind humans to Samsara, the ocean of birth and death. SLURP SOBA! = Toshi-koshi Soba — Everyone is invited to observe the tradition of eating Soba buckwheat noodles at midnight to “cross over the year.” Soba noodles are easy to cut while eating, reminding us to “let go” of our attachments to things that may happened in the past year. Soba plants knocked down by the wind will spring back and keep growing upwards — thus Soba is symbolic of long life, strength and resiliency. Namo Amida Butsu!
