NEW YEARS EVE FORECAST Good morning everyone, as we close out - TopicsExpress

NEW YEARS EVE FORECAST Good morning everyone, as we close out 2014, well have a partly sunny, beautiful day, albeit cold, with highs likely not reaching 30 degrees in many spots. It will be dry tonight with a light wind, and by the time midnight rolls around it could be down into the upper teens, so make sure to bundle up for those going out to enjoy the festivities. Speaking of which, if you are attending First Night Northampton, I am playing in two acts tonight, both in Theatre 14 in Smith College. My original rock trio, Colorway, plays at 7pm and 8pm (two 45 minute sets), and then Voices In The Sky, a tribute to the songs of The Moody Blues, hits at 9:15pm (one 45 minute set). Hope to see some of you! WEEKEND STORM Thursday and Friday will be dry as well, and cold, highs will moderate to around freezing or so on Friday. Then we turn to the weekend. There are a few factors in play. Well have low pressure ejecting out of the southwest U.S. and streaming east-northeast towards the Great Lakes. At the same time, well have a shortwave dropping out of Canada southeast towards the north-central part of the U.S. How fast the southwest low moves, will determine how far to the west it passes New England. So we will have to watch the interplay of these two pieces of energy to see what eventually plays out for us. Also, a secondary low will develop just to our south. With very cold high pressure in place, and this weak development, it could result in what is called cold air damming, which entrenches cold air in place at the surface, even if warm air is riding up and over it aloft. This usually leads to a front end thump of snow, and its not out of the question that we could see a few inches of snow Saturday night before a change over to sleet and freezing rain. How much the cold air hangs tough, and how fast or slow the two systems to our west phase, will determine how long of a period of icing occurs over our area, before changing to plain rain on Sunday with highs getting above the 40 degree mark. These setups can create substantial and prolonged periods of icing, so please stay tuned and I will keep you all updated as the weekend approaches. As for next week, we are going into the deep freeze, folks. I mean wicked cold, highs by end of the week only in the teens. We could see an Alberta Clipper low move through Tuesday night into Wednesday with a few inches of snow, too. There are still signs that we could be moving into a snowier period during the back half of this month into February. If you are out tonight, be safe and alert, and have a great time. I wish a wonderful, peaceful, enjoyable, fulfilling, and very Happy New Year to all of you!!
