NEW YORK CITY ISSUES 200 NEW TAXI MEDALLIONS WITH ALL 200 TO BE ACCESSIBLE... New owners or those expanding fleets paid $1.1 million each for the licenses to operate a taxi. The 200 new medallions are specifically all to be wheelchair accessible cabs. Sadly, this only raises the average number of accessible cabs to just over 3%, since only 231 of the existing 13,237 cabs can accommodate wheelchairs. In the interests of equity, New York should look north to Toronto which plans to overhaul and transform its cab fleet to be 100% accessible (see earlier post on PCOD Facebook page below). More information on the new licenses is in the NYDaily News link.
