NEWCASTLE WEST GAA Weekly Notes SENIOR FOOTBALL ACL The senior footballers were in Coolcappagh on Tues-day July 1st where Paddy Carroll refereed in excel-lent conditions. Both teams were a bit under strength. St. Kieran’s led for most of the game but we were ahead at the final whistle by the minimum, courtesy of a late, late Stephen Kelly point. Unfortunately, the well-kept account of the game has gone AWOL. Hopefully, it will surface before next week’s edition of the Weekly Observer. Yesterday, Tuesday, we were scheduled to play Fr. Casey’s away in the ACL. In the next round of the County Championship we oppose Adare. Three of the team – Ian Corbett (wing back), Jamie Lee, Cian Sheehan (both on the bench) were involved with Limerick in last Sunday’s Round 2 Qualifier win over Antrim, with Declan Brouder selecting. Con-gratulations to all. Training is ongoing. INTERMEDIATE HURLING WEST SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP Newcastle West v Granagh-Ballingarry Wednesday July 16th at 7.30pm. This will be a big test of skill, fitness, com-mitment etc., just what the doctor ordered for a team on a bit of a roll and readying for the County Championship, Round 4 v Caherline, will be at the beginning of August. Training continues. MINOR FOOTBALL PREMIER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Newcastle West v Mungret The Field, this Friday at 7.45pm are the arrange-ments. We can field a quality team capable of putting back-to-back titles together if all are available and training. Mungret are always competitive so a quality game is guarant-eed. JUNIOR A FOOTBALL WEST CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 5 Newcastle West...........1-9 Cappagh-Kilcornan..3-11 Donnacha O’Callaghan was the man in the middle for last Thursday’s game at Knockaderry. Our lads as usual gave it their best shot, but the League champions were the better team overall and deserved their win. The continuation of our season now depends on the result of the 6th and final round game v Feenagh-Kilmeedy. We should be there or there-abouts against the 2013 County Junior B Champ-ions, but will need a full turnout of eligible players. Team on Thursday: Andy Brouder, Tommy Kelleher, Karl Linehan, Darragh McMahon, James O’Sulli-van, Seoirse Joyce, James O’Sullivan, James Corbett, Liam McCartan Eoin Hurley, Brian Hurley, Jonathan Carey, Conor Whelan, Shane Stack. Subs: James Kelly, Timmy Nix, Seán Gleeson, Caleb O’Shea, James Hennessy. JUNIOR B HURLING WEST CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 3 Newcastle West v Tournafulla This Thursday at 7.30pm at Knockaderry. We had the upper hand in the League two months or so ago after a tough, comp-etitive game. Since then we have reached and lost the West League Final and, most recently, played well and won against Feenagh-Kilmeedy in the Champ-ionship. If all the eligibles are available, we’ll be there or thereabouts. Train-ing continues. MINOR HURLING WEST A CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 1 Newcastle West.........5-19 Templeglantine...........4-7 The field was the venue and Billy Phillips refereed. Conditions were excellent and there was quality in the hurling also. In the opening quarter ‘Glantine were on a roll and at 13 had 0-4 on the scoreboard to our 0-1. The tide then turned. We found form, got a grip on the game, scored freely, 2-10, and 2-11 to 1-5 ahead at half time. We pushed on in the second half, posting a further 3-7, limiting ‘Glantine to 0-2. In the last 5 minutes and tao (time added on) they resurrected, found a gap or two in our defence and helped themselves to 3-0, too little and too late. A good start to the Championship then for our lads who have plenty of skill, pace, toughness, tenacity etc., and who could go a long way in the county if they put in the necessary work on the training ground (“skill executed with pace and intensity” is the Brian Cody mantra!) Team: Conor O’Sullivan, Darren O’Doherty, Conor Barry, Killian McMahon, Kieran Nix, William Hurley 0-1, Seamus Hurley, Darragh McMahon 1-1, A.J. O’Connor 0-1, Shane Lee 0-1, Brian Hurley 0-1, Caleb O’Shea 1-0, Seán Murphy 2-1, Liam McCartan 0-10, Shane Stack 1-2. Subs: Eoin Sheridan, Thomas Darcy. Training continues and, of course, serious hurlers will be doing a lot of their own, ticking the boxes, according to the legendary Kilkenny manager’s creed! MINOR FOOTBALL PREMIER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP The weekend’s scheduled games against St. Patrick’s and Mungret didn’t go ahead. With many of the 2013 county minor winning panel available, we can field a talented outfit. However, talent without preparation, work rate, commitment will only get you so far. Training continues and the committed will be there. UNDER 16 HURLING COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION 2 Newcastle West.........3-10 Deel Rangers................1-9 The Field was the venue on Monday last. Conditions were excellent, sun, no wind and dry, and Seán Hartnett refereed. The game had a good level of skill and intensity, both teams committed and giving 100%. We had the edge in the first half, holding Deel to 1-5, Dylan Whelan 1-2, Cian Magner-Flynn 1-3, Michael Begley 0-2, our scorers as we posted 2-7. The score rate dropped considerably in the second half, a mere 0-3 to us by 59, Cian, Diarmuid Kelly, Dylan 0-1 each, 0-4 to the combination in total. The clinching goal came at 30 with Dylan striking to the corner of the net from 35 metres and at an angle, a quality goal from a flair player. Overall we were the better team but Deel made us work hard for the win we deserved. We are unbeaten in our group and looking good for a semi final place. Team: Brian Curtin, Lee Woulfe, Jack Downey, Joseph Nash, Duane McCoy, Diarmuid Kelly, Killian McMahon, Mikola Blaskev, Dylan Whelan 2-3, Michael Begley 0-2, Cian Magner-Flynn 1-4, Mikie Carroll, Roman Creedon, Ben Finnegan, Thomas Griffin. Subs: Miceál Collins, Jack Nash. Training continues. UNDER 15 FOOTBALL COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Newcastle West v Old Christians, the Field Monday next at 7.15pm. A recent football rivalry! UNDER 12 HURLING COUNTY LEAGUE Newcastle West v Croom At the Field, this Thursday at 6.45pm. It will be interesting to compete against and see how we compare with a team from a different division. Croom have history and tradition and reputation. Stephen Lucey, Peter Lawlor, Mickey Cahill, Conor Allis, four quality hurlers field with them in 2014. Should be worth a visit. UNDER 10 Training is on Wednesdays from 7 to 8pm and on Saturdays from 10 - 11.15am. UNDER 8 Training is on Wednesdays from 7 to 8pm and on Saturdays from 10 to 11.15am. BEGINNERS Training is on Wednesdays from 7.15 to 8.15pm and on Saturdays from 10 to 11.15am. Both session are at the all-weather. This training is targeted at those who are, 6 years of age in 2014, i.e. born in 2007/2008. INTERCOUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIERS ROUNDS 2 AND 3 Limerick....................3-11 Antrim.......................0-15 Limerick v Sligo John Brudair can be well satisfied after last Satur-day’s win at the Gaelic Grounds and the Round 3 draw. Saturday saw Limerick improve on their display against London, with senior players like John Galvin, Mark O’Riordan, Johnny McCarthy, Seánie Buckley and Padraig Browne showing the way to the new kids on the block such as Danny Neville, Darragh Treacy, Ger Hegarty, our own Ian Corbett. The Round 3 draw was kind, with Sligo roughly on a par with Limerick. As well as club player Ian, also on the panel were Jamie Lee and Cian Sheehan, with Declan Brouder selecting. Those who tuned into Live 95FM had no Liam Óg Aherne (he was getting married and congratulations to the former club player, mentor, PRO) but enjoyed Donn O’Sulllivan’s informative and interesting com-mentary. All in all a good day for Limerick football. INTERCOUNTY SENIOR AND MINOR HURLING MUNSTER CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS SH: Limerick v Cork MH: Limerick v Water-ford The atmosphere will be red hot by the Banks on Sunday next as Limerick defend their Munster titles, with opponents thirsting for revenge. With a reduced capacity, tickets will be like gold dust. Add to the mix that it’s the Pairc’s final game before its redevelopment and you’ve got a recipe for two classics. Big questions are: can Limerick do the double and will Liam Óg Aherne, who got married last Saturday, be commentating for Live 95FM? Come on ye Boys in Green. CLUB LOTTERY Last Monday’s draw took place at the Old Mill Bar. The numbers drawn were 1, 3, 9 and 26. The jackpot of €19,200 was not won.
