NEWRY U17 -17 ARDS U17 -17 League leaders Ards arrived to Telford with high expectations of securing a win. With only one previous defeat Ards certainly were a true test for a Newry side on their own winning streak. Newry started the match poorly by conceding a penalty in front of their own posts in the first play of the game which was converted by Ards. This spurred Newry on who began to dominate possession with backs Tarlach Byrne and Ciaran Hughes stretching the Ards defence who eventually conceded a penalty which was converted by Jack Mc Clelland. Ards hit back immediately with strong forward play pinning Newry back on their own line. Eventually Newry’s defence was breeched as Ards rumbled over for a try which was converted. Newry replied within minutes with Ciaran Hughes splitting the Ards defence with a well angled run to score under the posts. This spurred Newry on to dominate territory and poscession leading to Jack Mc Clelland scoring a try to leave Newry leading 17 10 at half time. The second half was a torrid affair with no quarter being asked for or given. However as the half wore on Ards bigger pack began to dominate turning over Newry ball time and time again. This led to a well deserved Ards try which was converted to leave the final score 17 all. The Newry side were proably more relieved to hear the final whistle as Ards were looking the stronger team but they will have learnt a lot in this game which will in turn make them a better side. They also extend their unbeaten winning streak to 4. Best for Newry were Cody Magill who led from the front and Ciaran Hughes who consistently looked dangerous in possession
