NEWS: A Birmingham shop owner has been fined for selling fake iPhone chargers that exploded when plugged into a socket. Birmingham City Council brought a case against Dalil Singh Bedi, 39, who runs Pound Plus Supermarket in Dudley Road, Winson Green, following a complaint from a customer. She told Birmingham Trading Standards that a phone charger, passed off with the iPhone brand, blew up when she attempted to use it and the same happened with the replacement Bedi gave her. Officer visited his shop and seized more than 70 chargers were seized, along with a number of Dr Dre Beats headphones. Tests revealed the products seized, including the phone chargers, were unsafe and did not comply with the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations (1994). Bedii was sentenced at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court to 200 hours’ unpaid work after pleading guilty to 25 offences relating to electrical safety, counterfeit goods and labelling regulations. He was also ordered to pay court costs of £2,276 and a £60 victim surcharge, while Pound Plus Supermarket was fined £3,400 and ordered to pay £120 victim surcharge.
