NEWS! ALDEVINCO To Get Facelift By Antonio L. Colina IV sunstar.ph Sunday, January 25, 2015 AFTER 50 years in space leasing business, homegrown conglomerate Alcantara Group sees now is the time to give Aldevinco Shopping Center a fresher look. The development plan for Aldevinco, the first and the oldest of its kind in Davao City, comes at the heels of the citys thriving economy, propelled by by real estate and tourism sectors. In an interview at the companys 50th anniversary at the SMX Convention Center Davao on Saturday, Alcantara Group chair Tomas I. Alcantara said they need to adjust to the fast-changing cityscape of downtown Davao after it has continued to experience exponential economic growth over the past years. This is basically the reason that prompted the company to advance several notches higher to keep up with the citys development. In 50 years, the surrounding landscape has tremendously changed. There are Marco Polo, Addus (Ateneo de Davao University) expansion, Ayalas high-rise condominium Avida, and Vivaldi Residences in this prime location, he said. He added the company is still in the early planning stage, but if plan comes to shove, the area where the shopping center stands is big enough to accommodate a vertical expansion that may include a condominium and an office space. He said he cannot determine as to when the construction will commence. As we continue to carry out the vision of our father, we look forward to transforming Aldevinco Shopping Center into a structure that will complement the new and growing cityscape around it, he said. What we will do on the higher floors, we can put a condominium, office space, or whatever that will add to the distinctive character of the place. But the ground floor and first storey will continue to remain as the original Aldevinco Shopping Center, he said. He vowed though that the shopping center, which has become a home to Mindanaos artisanal and indigenous crafts for five decades, will remain its rich character and spirit -- the same reason that has earned it as one of the tourism destinations of the city. The people (tenants) will continue to fill and fulfill their goals. As we look forward to the future, we reaffirm our contribution and commitment as a partner in the development and prosperity of Davao and Mindanao. I hope that our customers and the Davao community will remain nearest to support Aldevinco Shopping Center as we continue to share Mindanaos arts and culture to the wider public, he added. For her part, Rosvida A. Dominguez, executive vice president of Alsons and Investment Corporation, said they took pride in being the first to introduce the concept of a shopping complex in the city hatched by their parents Conrado Alcantara, founder of Alcantara Group, and wife Ladislawa. This special occasion for Aldevinco is one that spans across generation not only for our family but also to the owners, she said. With nowhere else to go for convenient shopping of goods and apparels back then, Conrado put up the Aldevinco in 1965 designed by Architect Roman Solitaria. Over the years, weve able to cater to an increasing number of tourists that come every year. Tourists are here and they have made Aldevinco a necessary stop before they go back home. In a way, were able to contribute in making Davao a destination and we hope that we will continue to be able to perform that function no matter how small in the years to come, the chairman added. Alsons Group, one of the countrys largest and most diversified Filipino-owned conglomerates, has interests in agriculture, aquaculture, mining, real estate, and power generation. There are eight property development projects in the city under the wing of Alsons Properties, the property development arm of Alsons Group -- the Ladislawa Garden Village, Woodridge Park, Las Terrazas, Northcrest, Fernwood, Woodlane, Eden Ridge, and Northtown.
