NEWS ALERT: New $5.6 million boarding facility a boon for country education and city jobs and small business Country families from remote parts of Capricornia and the city’s economy will benefit from the opening of a new $5.6 million Rockhampton school boarding facility - nearly $3 million of which was funded by the Australian Government. Federal Member for Capricornia opened the new boys boarding facility at The Cathedral College with Catholic Bishop Michael McCarthy last week. The hard-working MP said the project provided a diverse range of jobs and was a boost to the education of country students, who had little access to a full range of high school classes. Country kids often miss out on a lot because of their remoteness and for many of our hard-working country families, boarding school is the only way to ensure their children have access to a the same opportunities as city students, Ms Landry said. The Cathedral College project, totalling almost $5.6million, was funded through a $2.9 million Australian Government grant under the nations Capital Grants Programme. The balance came from a contribution of more than $2.4 million from The Cathedral College community and a grant of almost $139,000 from the State Government. “A project like this makes a significant contribution to our local economy in the form of jobs related to its architectural design, construction, electrical wiring, plumbing and the companies that supply raw materials,” Ms Landry said. “The accommodation facility also provides on-going opportunities for our small business sector, such as wholesale food, catering, kitchen and laundry services.” Ms Landry acknowledged the contribution of school Principal Rob Alexander, Catholic Diocesan Education Director Leesa Jeffcoat and Bishop Michael McCarthy. “These new facilities at The Cathedral College show exactly what can be achieved by a school with strong leadership and a clear vision for the future, while working with the Australian Government past and present, Ms Landry said
