NEWS ALERT: Shoppers in Capricornia are being urged to ‘log off’ and instead support their local small business sector in the countdown to Christmas. Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry hit the street today to encourage people to reduce their spending on-line and to instead spend money shopping in their local towns. At the same time she launched her own ‘I Love Capricornia’ campaign to promote pride in our region. The MP said local communities would be worse off if small business did not open their doors and invest in our towns. “While people like on-line shopping, wherever we are in the region, we need to support small family businesses as well, because they are the ones who provide jobs and stimulate growth and investment and general vibe in our communities,” Ms Landry said. “The best way to appreciate this is to support them at the till. Instead of shopping for everything on-line this Christmas, I’d urge people to get out and visit a local shop.” Ms Landry grew up in a small business family, helping her parents who ran the Lucky Daniels Casket Agency in Rockhampton for 21 years. As a 12-year-old she wrote out casket tickets and yarned with locals. “Without small business owners our communities would crumble. They’re the ones who invest, take the risks and generously donate to local causes,” she said. ‘I Love Capricornia’ Ms Landry has also launched her own campaign under the banner of ‘I Love Capricornia’ to further promote pride in the region. The campaign began with a local photo competition with entries submitted from all over Capricornia. People were asked to show what they loved best about living in Capricornia by taking a snapshot. Six winning photos (by Malcolm Wells, Rex Bloggs, Paula Heelan and Deb Stanes) featured on Ms Landry’s annual Christmas cards that were sent across Capricornia. “We wanted to talk up our region in a positive way and get people talking with pride about places they love and why they love living here,” Ms Landry said. “We have some great things in Capricornia that are worth crowing about.” All photo entries can be viewed at: michellelandry.au Ms Landry, meanwhile, wished shoppers a safe and happy Christmas and Capricornia’s small business owners a good year ahead.
