NEWS AUSTIN Local Liberians Raising Awareness for Ebola Cause By: Alese Underwood Updated 10/18/2014 03:16 PM TWC News: Local Liberians Raising Awareness for Ebola Cause As concerns over Ebola continue to spread throughout central Texas with seven people monitored for symptoms, local Liberians living in Austin are working to raise awareness and funds to send back home. By day, they are students at Huston-Tillotson University, but they are also three voices speaking up for their home countries. Within recent months theyve visited what used to be home and all three have lost a loved one from Ebola. Its very terrifying. Everyone is afraid,” Nigerian student Johnson Bobmanueo said. “They are afraid to go to work. Those who work in the hospitals are afraid to attend their jobs. They say fear of catching the disease is understandable, but other problems that come with Ebola can be just as devastating. People are getting scared and staying away from other people and the African children in the school are afraid to go to class now,” Bill Rogers with the Bill Rogers Youth Foundation said. “Its very bad because people are bullying them because theyre from Africa. The group is working to educate the public about Ebola through the Bill Rogers Youth Foundation. As a former Liberian Olympic team runner, Rogers believes he has the right connections to make a change. Outreach includes spreading information on how Ebola is transmitted and asking the public to donate gloves, sanitary products or money. Every day Im crying,” Rogers said. “Thats why Im appealing to the people for donations, if I only get one dollar or two dollars or whatever. Im speaking for the poor people who cannot afford. For me I can find a way. At this point seven people in Central Texas are being monitored for Ebola symptoms. We come to realize that the Ebola itself has no boundaries. It has no boundaries because it goes about killing just anyone. No matter your status, your race, no matter your color or which country youre from,” Siokin Civicus, Liberian senate candidate, said. “Ebola doesnt pick and choose.
