Please do not take out or retranslate into another language) ㆍBoy group BEAST, receiving attention in the music world in an unprecedented move by center piecing their ballads In the Korea music world, boy groups are generally divided into two categories. It would either be a performance-focused ‘music that can be seen’ emphasis or an only-ours musical color category. The representatives of the former would be DBSK and EXO while the latter would be Big Bang and Block B. The former has a strong celebrity feel while the latter exhibits the feel of an artist. For the consistently debuting boy groups, it is expected that they choose one of the two categories. For the 6-member group BEAST that is in their fifth year, instead of getting tied up in those categories, they have created their own style. With their latest album release , the pre-release ballad song as well as the dance song have swept the music charts and the music shows. The emotional ballad song have swept up the general public and the upgraded sharp choreography have united the fandom. Furthermore, member Yong Junhyung’s composing and producing has allowed them to show musical independence. Song and music experts have called their new category ‘All-weather idols’. It is rare for a boy group to push forward ballads instead of dance music. Although boy groups have good sales due to their fans, maintaining a high position on music sites is not usually common place. Although dance and/or electronic music seems like the mainstream only a certain group of people digest it well – on a music site that is supported/used by a wide range of music listeners, it is usually hard to get a good ranking. The executive secretary for Korea Music Content Industry Association (KMCIA) said, “BEAST, who broke the norms, have a high level of quality in their completed music itself and its confidence in attracting all age groups through music made it possible,” he added “Out of all the idol groups promotion currently, BEAST is the group with the largest age spectrum in their fans.” Music critic Noh Junyoung said “BEAST started out emphasizing on performance-based songs and later went on to develop each member’s singing ability. Therefore the live singing skills have greatly increased.” He continued “Out of the top class idols, the only team that manages to fill up the emotions (of a song) is BEAST.” Although there are instances of idol group members dabbling in composition, with the exception of a few teams, the others stop at event songs. Yong Junhyung too started learning how to compose and produce from Shinsadong Tiger and that side was broadcasting through a reality show – showing his event profile (T/N: To be honest, I don’t really know what they’re trying to say here.) Participating in album production for their first full album in 2011 , his skills have been growing continuously. Music critic Im Jinmo said “BEAST is a team that found a style that is only theirs. Personally, they’ve been producing polished music and therefore I’m anticipating to see what they accomplish in the future.” The public are also aware of the difference chemistry in BEAST’s team image or closeness. SBS variety PD Park Seungmin said “All 6 members have found their own color and talent in the different fields be it acting, variety, MC, musical etc. Although at first look, it looks like they don’t match well, they have one of the strongest synergy and team work.” He also added “Instead of the distance that celebrities that well known for, BEAST’s strength is that they exceptionally approachable and easily identifiable with.” When met up with member Jang Hyunseung at KBS recently, he said “Whenever we are contemplating on the challenges or the fears of a change, we want to talk to our fans honestly about it. If junior singers see us as a ‘group I want to emulate’, then there’s nothing else I hope for.” Music critic Kang Taegyu said “The common worry of many music planners(makers) is how to make/produce a group that is different from the rest.
