NEWS: City needs state OK on riverfront BY LAUREN P. DUNCAN lduncan@paducahsun The states approval is needed before Paducah can move forward with the next phase of the riverfront development project. (Its) a project that I think is on the cusp of going forward in a big step here very quickly, City Manager Jeff Pederson said at Tuesdays regular City Commission meeting. The Paducah Riverfront Development Authority presented recommendations to the commission in April 2014 to continue with development of Paducahs riverfront, which includes plans to expand Schultz Park and construct a transient dock. About $5.1 million in grant funding is available for the project. In April 2014, the City Commission approved that documents regarding the plans for the riverfront development be sent to different grant agencies. Rick Murphy, city engineer and public works director, told City Commission members Tuesday that the project plans need to go through the Local Public Agency process, or LPA process, to make sure the project meets state and federal funding requirements. Once they have reviewed it and say that were good to go, then they will give us the green light on allowing us to bid this project, Murphy said. Murphy said he did not know how long the states review will take. He said the city will know more about the proposed costs of the project once it goes out to bid. Also Tuesday: n McCracken District Judge Tony Kitchen conducted the swearing-in ceremony for the Paducah Police Departments newest officer recruit, Cody Santel. Santel, 22, is from Petersburg, Illinois, and is a Murray State University graduate. n The commissioners voted to amend the Paducah Golf Commission promissory note. In December 2013, the commission approved a $225,000 loan to the golf course board for improvement projects and equipment purchases. Tuesdays decision reduces the principal payment the board must make for this calendar year to $6,000, which Pederson said has to do with weather that led to unexpected costs at the golf course this year. The note must be paid in full by 2024. n The commission accepted a $5,000 Paula Nye Memorial Education Grant for Bicyclist and Pedestrian Safety. The grant will go toward an after school program through the Parks Services Department that will educate youth on bike safety. The funding will also be used for a campaign to inform the public about the Greenway Trail.
