NEWS FLASH! ‘Black Bodies and Britain’s Cultural Institutions: Acts of Public Li-ability?’ As part of the cultural programme leading up to the MA Black British Writing we invite you to an extra event for BLACK HISTORY MONTH: This pop-up event responds to the recent furor over the Barbican’s decision to remove Brett Bailey’s ‘Exhibit B’ after public protest. While black academics remain low in numbers in UK universities, black peoples bodies (even in agreed participation) were being housed willingly as objects in this leading UK arts venue. What does this say about acceptable spaces and uses for black peoples bodies in Britain’s cultural institutions in 2014? Sara Myers, journalist and activist, who spearheaded the petition to boycott ‘Exhibit B, (‘No More Human Zoo’) is joined by International Relations scholar Dr Robbie Shilliam (Queen Mary, University of London), and well-known author Courttia Newland (Kingston University). Our panel will explore the spaces allowable for black people’s cultural agency, the valuing of black heritage in educational curricula, the role of collective protest, and replicating vs learning from, the mistakes of the past. How can dialogues begin? What are the limits for cultural expression? All are welcome. Please bring opinions, comments, and questions to this discussion. FIRST COME FIRST SERVED! WHERE – George Wood Theatre, Goldsmiths University of London WHEN – Monday 6th October at 6.30pm HOW TO BOOK: sign up under Black Bodies and Britain’s Cultural Institutions https://eventbrite.co.uk/edit?eid=13340322263
