NEWS FLASH! For those of you that think that John Calvin came straight out of the throne room of God, and that every word he spoke was God breathed. Please read the following. Calvins fortunes shifted again in 1538 when the Libertines took over Geneva. He and Farel escaped to Strasbourg. By 1540, the Libertines had been ousted and Calvin returned to Geneva, where he began a long series of reforms. He redid the church on an apostolic model, with no bishops, clergy of equal status, and lay elders and deacons. All elders and deacons were members of the consistory, a church court. The city was moving toward theocracy, a religious government. The moral code became criminal law in Geneva; sin became a punishable crime. Excommunication, or being thrown out of the church, meant being banned from the city. Lewd singing could result in the persons tongue being pierced. Blasphemy was punished by death. Calvin was a theologian, but was not a follower of Jesus. He was a brute beast with a following of mean spirited thugs. Much of church teaching today comes from direct quoting of his works.
