NEWS HEADLINES 12TH NOV 2013 1.UniversThe University of Ghana, Legon, will stop running diploma programmes after the 2015/2016 academic year. The decision, which will be gradual, is in line with the proposed transformation of the school into a research university. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, who announced this at the congregation of the university over the weekend, said the move would place greater emphasis on post-graduate work and research.ity of Ghana to stop diploma courses 2.NPP petitions CJ to investigate allegations against Nana Oye Lithur The opposition New Patriotic Party(NPP) has officially petitioned the Chief Justice to investigate allegations that Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur met with some Justices of the Supreme Court before the final ruling on the election petition. 3.NDC, NPP disagree on modalities for appointment of EC Boss The two leading political parties in the country, the NPP and the NDC have disagreed on proposed modalities for appointing the chairman of the electoral commission. Some political parties that have been critical of the electoral commission over the years want parliament to be the institution that approves the appointment of the EC chair. They want the EC boss’ appointment confirmed by a two-thirds majority of lawmakers. Proponents of this believe it enable Ghanaians to have confidence in the work of the EC boss as well as prevent the EC from being intransigent in its work. NPP’s former national chairman, Peter Mac-Manu supports the proposals and justified them in an interview with XYZ News.He said “the current system where the President of the Republic subject to consultation with Council of state appoints [EC Chairman] is not enough in our democratic dispensation.“What should be done is that our representation in Parliament which constitutes another major arm of our democracy must be involved like its happening in Nigeria, Liberia and other countries”.But the NDC’s general secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah strongly disagrees with the position of the opposition NPP. 4.Parliamentary staff threaten protest over conditions of service; budget likely to be affected Staff of Parliament are threatening series of demonstrations to demand improved salaries and service conditions. The eminent protest could affect parliamentary activities including the presentation of the 2014 budget and government financial policy that had been scheduled for next week Tuesday.Chairman of Parliament Workers Union, Maxwell Tetteh, said the agitation was borne out of the poor working conditions that members of the union have been experiencing. According to him, their salaries have not been reviewed since April 2005.He said the workers union has written formally to management about their concerns and has given them up to the end of the month to react to the issues raised.“We will be working but everyone will put on red armbands; coming events casts their shadows”, Mr. Tetteh told JoyNews. The Union chairman further indicated that even after the introduction of the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS), their condition of service is nothing to write home about.“Parliament is an institution and we are all public sector workers and so if after more than three years of [the implementation] of Single Spine Salary and we are still marking time, how do you expect us to cope”, he quizzed.Mr. Tetteh said members of the Union will embark on series of agitations to press home their demands since “management has turned a blind eye and a deaf ear to it without seeing to it that the important thing is done”. Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Ajaho will be meeting the workers tomorrow to resolve the issue amicably.
