NEWS:Hearing impaired students suffer for want of teachers The government wants qualified teachers to educate hearing impaired students but in nine of 11 schools across the State the delay in hiring is affecting the students’ performance. It is unable to maintain the required student-teacher ratio of eight to one. The lack of teachers severely affects the quality of training imparted, say teachers. “We use more of lip syncing and the emphasis is on enabling them to enter mainstream. Children struggle when they come into special schools in higher classes as the method of teaching is different from normal schools,” a teacher said. A senior official of the Department for the Welfare of the Differently Abled said the list of vacancies for teacher positions had been sent to the Teachers Recruitment Board. The official said the delay was due to the stringent qualification criteria followed by the government.
