NEWS: Libraries across #Gloucestershire are now recruiting volunteers to be ‘reading activists’ for the Summer Reading Challenge The Summer Reading Challenge gets three quarters of a million children nationally to read six library books in the summer holidays. The theme this year is the Mythical Maze. With the support of the Summer Reading Challenge volunteers, even more children aged four to 11 will be encouraged to join the library and the biggest reading for pleasure programme in Gloucestershire. Young people who sign up to volunteer as reading activists will gain new skills and opportunities through activities in their local libraries and communities. Working alongside library staff, reading activists can help children read for the Summer Reading Challenge, assist with creative reading and writing events, and gain new skills and accreditation for volunteering along the way. There will also be the chance to meet writers, artists and other creative people. This is the 16th Summer Reading Challenge and it grows in popularity every year. Last summer, 9,847 children took part in Gloucestershire, with 6178 (63%) of them completing the challenge and receiving their medal and certificate at the library – one of the highest completion rates nationally. Between them, they read an amazing 221,938 library books. Cllr Dorcas Binns, cabinet member for libraries at Gloucestershire County Council, said: “Volunteers will be helping staff to join children up to the challenge, talking to them about the books they have read, assisting with themed activities and of course encouraging them to make more visits to the library to complete the challenge.” Throughout the school summer holidays, libraries across Gloucestershire will run special Mythical Maze themed events.
