NEWS: More than 500 people have given us their views on the future of public services in #Gloucestershire – have you had your say? Gloucestershire County Council is carrying out a major consultation to find out what people think about a significant change of direction for public services in a bid to save £75million over the next three years. Meeting the Challenge – Together we can launched on 9th June and in the first two weeks, more than 500 people have either completed the online survey or attended a roadshow event and completed a questionnaire. People visiting the website gloucestershire.gov.uk/togetherwecan have been viewing animated scenarios which help to explain the change in focus the council is looking at. Jack’s story explains how 74-year-old Jack lives alone and enjoys his independence until he starts to become unwell and is diagnosed with the onset of dementia. In the past, Jack reluctantly ends up in a residential care home to ensure he is safe. In the future, Jack is able to keep his independence with the use of Telecare systems and targeted support. We also meet Sarah, 16 and her 11-year-old brother Bob. Both live with their single mother with who they have a difficult relationship. Sarah has an unplanned pregnancy and Bob is continuously in trouble in school and eventually with the police. In the past Bob is excluded from school and referred to a Pupil Referral Unit and continues to cause trouble. Sarah struggles with her relationship with her mother and brother and reluctantly agrees that her child should go into foster care. In the future, the family is put in touch with a Families First advisor who supports the whole family to stay together to work through their issues. Over the next two weeks, new scenarios will be uploaded to the website and we will meet Melanie who is struggling with health problems, Joy who wants to remain independent after an accident, Greg who’s looking for support for his mum Sue and Ben who has learning difficulties. People have until Monday 4th August, to tell us what they think and they can do that in person at one of the public roadshows or online at gloucestershire.gov.uk/togetherwecan. Cllr Mark Hawthorne, Leader of Gloucestershire County Council, said: “These animations have been created to make it as easy as possible for people to understand what we’re proposing. “Most of us should be able to relate to at least one of these scenarios and I hope that they help people to see why we need to change how we do things. “I’m pleased that more than 500 people have already told us what they think – if you haven’t had your say yet then please do visit our website or come along to a roadshow and give us your views.” For more information, visit gloucestershire.gov.uk/togetherwecan.
