NEWS: NATIONAL ENDURO CHAMPIONSHIP 06.09.2014 BROTHER KTM’S YOUNG CLEANS UP AT WINTERBERG ENDURO WHILE TEASDALE IMPRESSES WITH ANOTHER PODIUM FINISH The scenic little town of Patensie in the Eastern Cape played host to the Winterberg Enduro, the fifth and penultimate round of the SA Liquorland National Enduro championship where competitors had to complete a distance of 203 km’s consisting of a 53 km loop that included three specials tests and that had to be completed three times with a shortened loop on the last lap. Competitors were privileged to race in and around the Patensie citrus farms and a sunny day greeted riders and spectators alike. The terrain was very rugged and hard on the body, making it probably the hardest National Enduro this season so far. Regularity times were calculated very tight and only the top competitors managed to make their regularity times without incurring penalties for being late. Three special tests had to be completed on each lap, starting with a 2.5 km Endurocross type test, then a 6 km Enduro test and a 2 km Extreme test that had to be completed at the end of every lap. Brother KTM’s Wade Young was on top form again and left the competition behind by securing yet another overall and his fifth consecutive E1 class win this season. “It was hard to pass other competitors, the long stage was pretty fast and flowing but it was tricky to maintain the pace with all these lose rocks. The Endurocross test was awesome, the organisers put a lot of effort in with all these man made obstacles and I really enjoyed it. My KTM 250 XC-F worked extremely well which makes everything so much easier.”, said a very happy Wade Young. His teammate Travis Teasdale didn’t disappoint either on board his KTM 250 XCF-W with another overall podium finish and his fifth consecutive podium finish in the E1 class. Both Teasdale and Young are now off to Turkey to participate in the Red Bull Sea to Sky Extreme Enduro taking place in Kemer, Turkey from 26 to 28 September where they will test their skills amongst the world elite of Extreme Enduro in preparation of the Roof of Africa event later this year. In the E2 (Open) class Brother KTM’s Louwrens Mahoney opted for his trusty KTM 500 XC-W machine, which brought him the overall win at the previous event in Lydenburg, Mahoney however had to settle for third place in this highly competitive class and is now lying second in the E2 championship. Mahoney who just secured the Liquorland Hyde Enduro regional championship title is now looking forward to the last round of both the Offroad and Enduro championship as he’s amongst the title contenders for both the National Offroad championship as well as the E2 class in the National Enduro championship. Mahoney’s teammate Scott Bouverie could unfortunately not attend the Winterberg Enduro as he is still recovering from a back injury that he suffered earlier this year. Local PE riders Juan ‘Bollie’ van Rooyen who is more of an offroad specialist decided to come and race the Winterberg Enduro on his KTM 300 XC-W Offroad weapon and secured a fourth place in the Seniors class. Brother KTM’s lady rider Kirsten Landman finished in 6th place in the Silver class and was the first lady finisher home. The Masters class was once again dominated by Alfie Cox who secured his fifth class win this year. The final round of the SA Liquorland National Enduro championship will take place in Matatiele on 25 October. Championship standings (top 5 overall, provisional) after round 5 of 6: Pos.
