NEWS:(NIGERIA) ASUU strike: UI students protest STUDENTS of the University of Ibadan, on Thursday, grounded vehicular movement at some junctions beginning from the main gate of the university, as they marched from there through Sango, Mokola, to protest what they called Federal Government’s insensitivity to education sector in Nigeria. Led by their leaders, the students in their hundreds, chanted anti-government songs and called for the resignation of the Minister of Education. They also carried placards with inscriptions such as “Nigeria: Giant or dwarf of Africa; Adieu to education sector in Nigeria; ASUU don’t betray this struggle with earned allowance; Education is dead in Nigeria; Nigeria, ant of Africa; say no to low standard of education” among others. They took their time to address the public at Sango junction, Elewure junction, Veterinary junction and terminated at the Mokola interchange where the UI Students Union Government (SUG) President and NANS Coordinator for South-West, Babatunde Badmus and Adeyemo Monsuru gave their address. The peaceful protest was supervised by the Divisional Police Officer of Sango, Mrs Cybil Olufunmilayo Akinfenwa, who commended the students for their peaceful conduct. As the protest halted, vehicular movements, commuters, transporters and other road users groaned. While supporting the ASUU strike and calling for early resolution, the UI SUG president called on the Federal Government to honour agreements reached with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). In a communiqué read at the Mokola Roundabout, Badmus urged the government to ensure that budgetary allocation to the education sector is increased to 26 per cent in line with UNESCO minimum standard. While urging ASUU to prioritise the revitalisation of quality education, the students bemoaned what they called “unnecessary establishment of more mushroom tertiary institutions in the country while the available ones suffer miserable neglect.” Badmus said “Awolowo invested so much in education and we can all testify to it but our president is non- challant. He takes pride in jetting out while pressing national issues that need his attention arise. Ruqqayat Rufai should resign if she lacks the clue to solve the problem in the education sector. They take their children outside the country and allow private universities to cripple public universities in order to deprive the children of the masses right to education. We shall resist this attempt.” Source:Nigerian Tribune
