NEWS; One of Ghana’s leading oil Palm Processing companies, operating in the Western Region, NORPALM, says farmers’ growing desire to get into rubber farming, poses a major threat to their survival. Established in 1969 as Asakru Oil Mill and diversified in September 2000 under Government’s divestiture programme, Norpalm processes crude palm oil for both domestic and industrial consumption. Currently more farmers in the region have gained interest in rubber plantations to the extent that some are hurriedly converting food crop farms to rubber. Although NORPALM has made giant strides in the past, its General Manager, Eric Annang says the rise and fall of prices is also to blame for this development. He is however calling for a healthy competition amongst players in the oil palm industry as a way of tackling the threats facing the sector.
