NEWS RELEASE - 26 January 2014 Akamas Clean-up Team (ACT) 8th (CHRISTMAS!) Clean-up Summary Report Dear All, The Akamas Clean-up Team (ACT) of Volunteers held its Eighth Clean-up of the Akamas Peninsula on Saturday 7 December 2013. We had a good turn-out of 10 Volunteers who collected and removed 63 bags of rubbish and a lot of large debris, including a big rusty freezer (how did that get there?!), from the beach and back-shore of the Tzioni Area, Western Akamas Peninsula, Pafos District, Cyprus, in Area 3 of the ACT Rubbish Collection Zone and Areas Map. We were lucky with the weather as we enjoyed a fairly sunny, if very windy, day with bracing sea air, whilst successfully dodging heavy rain, which at times came ominously close to us! The area was full of flotsam and jetsam rubbish of all sorts and included, for some unknown reason, a huge quantity of footwear! Take a look at the selection of “before, during and after Clean-up” photographs posted in the latest (8th) Album of ACT’s Facebook Page: facebook/AkamasCleanupTeam As noted on previous Clean-ups, the vast majority of this rubbish would have been deposited on the beach from the sea brought in by winds, storms, tides and currents. Just imagine how much rubbish originating from human waste is polluting the seas and coastlines around Cyprus and the rest of the world! The large quantities of old dried out and rock encrusted oil/tar deposits, which I mentioned in the pre-Clean-up message, would really need a Clean-up session devoted completely to trying to remove it – which would not be easy. It was very satisfying to see the beaches and scrub areas behind them looking very much better after we finished our Clean-up as the “before and after” photographs graphically illustrate. After the Clean-up a few of us savoured the fresh invigorating sea air whilst we ate lunch and warmed up with tea and coffee and entered into (and drank!) the seasonal spirit! On behalf of ACT, I would like to express my gratitude to Mr Andreas Christodoulou the Mukhta and the Staff of the Communal Board of Neo Chorio Pafou, for supplying the rubbish collection bags and to Mr Costas Ioannou of the Forestry Department at Drouseia for organising the proper disposal of the rubbish which ACT collected. I sincerely thank the following ACT Volunteers who once again willingly and generously gave up their free time to make possible yet another successful Clean-up of the natural and beautiful Akamas Peninsula to benefit its environment and its animal and plant wildlife: Adam – Coral Bay Dinos – Neo Chorio Jane – Pano Arodes Keith – Lasa Keith, Wendy & Simon – Neo Chorio Paul & Jenny – Pegeia Trevor – Pano Arodes And not forgetting “Milo” of course who has supported all eight Clean-ups so far and she also found a new friend on this Clean-up! Next (9th) Clean-up: As previously confirmed on 20 January the next Clean-up will be held on Saturday 8 February 2014 with details to follow shortly. Please feel free to disseminate information about ACT to any person(s) or organisation(s) who/which would be interested in joining us on future Clean-ups of the Akamas Peninsula - providing the Facebook Page will be an easy way of doing this. My best wishes and I hope to see as many of you as possible on 8 February! Yours, Keith.
