NEWS RELEASE CONTACT: Adriana Gianturco Saltonstall July 31, 2014 CITING LACK OF NBA RECORDS, CITIZENS APPEAL TO DELAY DOWNTOWN ARENA DEMOLITION Twelve citizens petitioning for project environmental review of the downtown Sacramento sports arena have appealed a Sacramento judge’s refusal to issue an injunction. They note that the City and the Sacramento Kings have refused to disclose any NBA threat to take the team unless downtown Sacramento demolition begins on their corporate sports arena, “The traffic jams, after-event crowds, parking and other impacts should be studied before—not after—the project is built,” said Adriana Saltonstall, one of the 12 Sacramento residents who filed suit under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). “The City and the Kings promoted cutting corners with the constant claim that they have a deal with the NBA to build the arena by 2017 or the NBA can take the team elsewhere,” she added. “But they refused to provide proof of that deal in court. The deadlines are a hoax.” In making their case for a court injunction the Citizens argued that the project was approved under an unconstitutional exemption custom-tailored by exiting state senator Darrell Steinberg. The Steinberg special-interest Sacramento arena law virtually removes the power of the courts to require a proper EIR before—not after—the project is built, contrary to citizen rights under CEQA.
