NEWS RELEASE DATE/TIME:1/16/15 CONTACT OFFICER: Detective Mark Haslam BY: Sergeant Pat Kropholler CRIME/INCIDENT: Grand Theft - 487 PC LOCATION: UPS Sorting Facility Anderson, CA SUSPECTS – Kevin Christopher Peel, 40 year old male resident of Anderson, CA SYNOPSIS: In October 2013, an investigation was initiated regarding missing UPS shipments destined for precious metal dealers in Shasta County. Because of the amount of parcels missing and the contents being high value, detectives with the Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit believed the parcels were stolen during the shipping process. Silver coins, silver bars and gold bars were among the shipments. The approximate value in stolen precious metals exceeded $200,000.00 at the time of the initial reports. On October 8, 2014, UPS supervisors were alerted to more parcels containing precious metals were missing. UPS supervisors contacted their employees coming back from their routes. One of the drivers, Kevin Peel, refused to allow them to search his lunch boxes upon contact as per their internal company policy. Supervisors then contacted Sheriff’s detectives and reported the incident. On October 9, 2014, Sheriff’s detectives served a search warrant at Peel’s residence off Gaines Lane in Anderson. During the search, detectives found cases of gold bars and silver coins matching the same quantities reported stolen during the time of October 2013. Approximately $197,000.00 in gold and silver was recovered. Among items found at Peel’s residence was an empty UPS parcel with the address label to a Redding area business and an invoice with a date of June 2014. The empty parcel was later tracked and confirmed as being missing during shipment and had contained silver coins valued over $10,000.00. Those suspected missing coins and exact quantity were located in Peel’s residence. Detectives also located a large amount of bulk US currency which was also seized and believed to be the proceeds from illicit transactions. Peel had been a person of interest early in the investigation however, there was no supporting evidence at the time that he committed the actual thefts. On today’s date, a Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes detective spotted Peel driving in the area of Anderson. Peel was arrested on an active arrest warrant regarding this investigation and booked in lieu of $250,000.00 bail. The investigation is ongoing.
