NEWS RELEASE REPS COMMITTEE ON WORKS POISED TO ENSURE COMPLIANCE WITH PROJECTS’ SPECIFICATIONS & DESIGN. House of Representatives Committee on Works has vowed to ensure that all contractors handling Federal Government projects comply with specifications and design for an effective delivery of road and other construction works. The committee led by its chairman Hon. Ogbuefi Ozombuchi was on a tour of on-going Federal road projects in Oyo state and inspected the section one ant two of Ibadan-Ogbomoso-Ilorin dualisation road project. Armed with sophisticated machines and implements, the committee tested a portion of Ibadan-Oyo road to ascertain that the height and quality of tar-sand met the required standard while the site engineer of PW Construction Company, Mr. J. Bucknor watched with keen interest. Satisfied with their finding, the Reps committee moved down to the section two of the road, the on-going 52 kilometere Oyo-Ogbomoso road and carried out their test too. The House committee Chairman explained that it was necessary to ascertain compliance in order to justify the one billion naira per kilometre paid to the contractors handling this dualised road project adding that roads constructed are supposed to last for a long and specific number of years. Meanwhile, site supervising engineer of RCC, handling this section of the road was hands akimbo as the tests were being carried out. The Federal Controller of Works, Oyo State, Engr. Anya Njoku Omerekpe was also on hand to respond to some technical questions posed by members of House Committee. Earlier, the Committee had paid a courtesy call on the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Senator Isiaka Ajumobi where Hon, Ogbuefi Ozombuchi told the state’s helmsman that the Reps Committee was on tour of federal road projects in the Southwest geo-political zone as part of its oversight functions and to ensure that roads constructed met the required specifications. The Committee Chairman told the governor that the House of Representatives approved in the 2013 Federal budget for Oyo state the sum of 2.5 billion Naira from about 16 billion Naira it spent in the rehabilitation of Federal roads. Responding, the governor represented by Deputy governor, Otunba Moses Adeyemo, thanked the Federal Government for the gesture but urged it to quickly release the approved fund and pay the balance soonest.
