NEWS RELEASE Saturday, 02nd August 2014 President calls on all people to embrace the National Census Exercise President Yoweri Museveni has called on all wananchi to embrace the National Population and Housing Census exercise that is slated to commence on 28th August to 6th September 2014. The President was addressing the nation this morning at State House, Nakasero over the forthcoming Census exercise. The exercise will be held under the theme “Counting for Planning and Improved Service Delivery”, conducted by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS). The last National Population and Housing Census took place in September 2002. “The National Population and Housing Census is being conducted to help the Government to plan better for its people and it was the most credible source of benchmark data on population size and fertility rate in the country”, he said. President Museveni observed that the forthcoming National Census would be the first one to take place since peace returned to Northern Uganda especially in the Acholi and Lango Sub-Regions. He noted that both the National Census and National Identity Card projects include capturing the bio-data, residence, education and occupation of persons. He further elaborated that the on-going Identity Card project is about the individual and is designated for people aged 16 years and above. He said that it is intended to cater the aspect of citizenship, credit rating and crime prevention. Mr. Museveni observed that commercial banks’ lending interest rates are high in the country because customers who borrow money from those financial institutions tend to offload the failure loan defaulters on customers who move in to contract loans. Elaborating more on the forthcoming National Census exercise, President Museveni said that it is intended to look at households and groups of people. He revealed that the exercise will collect information on households purposely for matters of planning. He revealed that due to the detailed information needed, Government has allocated 10 days to accomplish the task. He observed that the information gathered will be important for monitoring economic changes in the various households in the country. He strongly called on the people in the country to give accurate information for the sake of national development. The President said the NRM Government’s liberalization policy has made a positive impact on the national economy and cited the transport sector and the media industry, as some of the areas that have recorded tremendous progress on account of liberalization.
