NEWS: Sam Cooke’s ‘Portrait of a Legend: 1951–1964′ to Be Released on Vinyl (Story by: Jeff Giles for The BoomBox) Discerning soul fans will have the chance to give their turntables a treat later this summer when Sam Cooke‘s ‘Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964′ makes its vinyl debut. Originally released in June 2003, ‘Portrait of a Legend’ was previously available only on CD and MP3. As the label’s press release notes, vinyl was “the dominant format at the time of Cooke’s greatest success,” so it only makes sense that this collection should receive its analog due — and it looks like ABKCO has taken the requisite care with this reissue, presenting 31 career-spanning classic cuts (including the hidden track ‘Soul,’ previously available only on the Super Audio layer of the SACD version) spread over two LPs. Commonly referred to as the King of Soul, Cooke enjoyed a torrid string of hits during his relatively brief career, notching more than 30 Top 40 singles between 1957 and 1964. ‘Portrait’ traces the evolution of Cooke’s artistry, starting with his early gospel period and tenure with the Soul Stirrers, and continuing through his massive crossover success as a solo artist. All told, the songs collected on this compilation spent nearly 10 years on the pop and R&B charts combined. Pressed on 200-gram vinyl, the newly reissued ‘Portrait of a Legend’ offers a listening experience that the label promises will be “nothing less than extraordinarily authentic,” starting with freshly cut master lacquers and vinyl from two of the industry’s top mastering houses. The new package also includes the original ’03 liner notes, penned by biographer and noted rock historian Peter Guralnick, as well as detailed liner notes. Shaft Music Management comment: This is a MUST HAVE, youll also need turntables cause theys bringing it old school, Bring back the Vinyl the black gold all Djs love.
