NEWS : THE GAP BETWEEN RICH AND POOR INCREASES IN MK MK Community Foundation’s 2014 Vital Signs report highlights that the gap between rich and poor continues to grow in MK. Statistics from last year’s report have been updated and reveal that in some estates 2 in 5 children live below the poverty line, more than double the national average. Vital Signs is an annual report bringing together research on Milton Keynes in a format that’s accessible to the whole community. It highlights our strengths and the challenges we face as a city, offering a balanced review of how well we are functioning as a community and how well we are supporting local people. MK Community Foundation then uses this research to focus its grant making. The 2013 Vital Signs report highlighted that 1 in 5 children in MK live below the poverty line, leading to the Community Foundation’s Eat Sleep Play Love campaign to help families in crisis. With the news that 2 in 5 children are living in poverty in parts of our city, MK Community Foundation’s calls for support via donations from local people are even stronger. Julia Upton, Chief Executive said “We conduct this research to determine how we can best support local people via our grant making. With a renewed focus on child poverty, amongst other surprising data, such as a worrying trend of increasing obesity, we will continue to work towards supporting key charities helping people in need in Milton Keynes.” This summary report is an update to last year’s Vital Signs MK 2013 report, which presented the results of research across eleven important themes.
