NEWS UPDATE|| #Canada to join US-led coalition against #ISIL Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper seeks parliamentary support for joining a US-led international coalition against the ISIL terrorist group operating in Iraq. During his address to the House of Commons on Friday, Harper said the motion will authorize air raids for a period of up to six months and explicitly stated that infantry will not be used in operations against the militants. He went on to say that parliament would vote on the counter-terrorism mission on Monday. The motion is expected to pass as a majority of lawmakers are from Harpers Conservative government. The threat ISIL represents is real, serious, and explicitly directed in part at our country, he said, adding, Left unchecked, this terrorist threat can only grow. According to Harper, an unspecified number of CF-18 fighter jets and a refueling tanker aircraft would be sent to Iraq. Canadian opposition parties have been putting pressure on the prime minister to be more transparent about the plan. Referring to the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 which has led to the deaths of thousands of civilians, New Democratic Party leader Tom Mulcair said, The defeat of the insurgency in Iraq is a goal the United States has been trying without success to achieve since the wrongheaded invasion of 2003. The prime minister insists that this mission in Iraq will not be allowed to become a quagmire. But isnt that precisely what our American allies have been facing in Iraq for the last 10 years?” the opposition leader stated, adding, Will Canada be stuck a decade from now mired in a war we wisely avoided entering a decade ago? The United States and some of its allies have been conducting airstrikes against the ISIL terrorists in Iraq since early August. They extended their airstrikes to Syria last month.
