Makerere University students have this morning engaged the police in running battles as they tried to close the university gates protesting the 10% increment in tuition fees. Currently, police is heavily deployed at the campus. The university guild president Ivan Boowe says they cannot just sit and watch as students are exorbitantly charged. He further demands that the campus Vice Chancellor, Prof Ddumba Sentamu “resign immediately as he has failed to run a public university in the interest the future generation of this country.” DPC Kampala, Sam Omara has blamed MUK leaders for not working on the institution’s issues before situations get out of hand and develop into strikes. Mbale municipality residents are crying foul over the poor sanitation in the region. For the past 15 years, the town has suffered heaps of garbage, human wastes in polythene bags along the streets and poor sewerage systems.
