NEWS UPDATES AT 8 O’CLOCK WITH ORANGE. In a bid to solve shortage of staff in the health sector, Government plans to recruit 30,000 health workers. The permanent secretary in the ministry of health Dr. Asuman Lukwago while meeting members of parliament recently, revealed that also another 3000 workers who were not recruited last financial year due to lack of funds will this time round be employed. 30 billion shillings has been given to the ministry for these sign ups. Health Service Commission Chairperson Prof Puis Okong said that the health sector has failed to attract and retain medics thus leading to poor quality health service. The commission has urged parliament to work towards improving the working conditions for the medical personnel. Women activists have called on Government to set up measures guaranteeing that children living in slums and other urban poor settlements go to school. The activists who were touring Kikubamutwe slum in Kampala recently, noted that despite the availability of the Universal Primary Education (UPE), many children were finding it hard to attend UPE schools because they cannot afford to have the necessary requirements such as books, uniforms and food. They said the UPE situation will get worse when the 2014/15 national budget is employed as it sees the capitation grant to UPE schools reduced and taxation on educational materials like books. The executive director of Forum for Women in Democracy Patricia Munabi Babiiha, says that all the citizens of Uganda deserve to live in dignity unlike the livelihood in Kikubamutwe which is a disgrace requiring government to act fast to help the children living in such areas. Meanwhile, Minister of Education and Sports, Jessica Alupo, said more should be done to sensitise parents about the Education Act which makes it clear that in the absence of such things like uniforms, children should be allowed to continue with their studies. Fighting has flared outside the rebel-held east Ukrainian city of Luhansk, with rebels saying government forces tried to storm the city with tanks. Rebel military leader Igor Strelkov was quoted as saying his forces had beaten off columns of government armour attacking from the south and west. Pro-Ukrainian sources in the city of 425,000 people reported skirmishes. At least 15 civilians were killed in Luhansk and the neighbouring Donetsk region on Sunday. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed that the situation in Ukraine was tending towards deterioration.” Decisions on whether a footballer can return to the pitch after a head injury should be taken by an independent doctor, and not the player or coach. An editorial in The Lancet Neurology says these decisions should not be made by those with a vested interest. FIFPro, the footballers union, has called for an investigation into concussion protocols. This follows players being allowed to play on after appearing to be concussed during the World Cup. Because signs and symptoms of concussion can be delayed, removing an athlete when there is any suspicion of injury would seem to be the safest approach, the journal editors wrote. They refer to a recent World Cup group match against England, when Uruguays Alvaro Pereira returned to the pitch after appearing to be knocked unconscious by a blow to the head. Pereira admitted to arguing with his team doctor, demanding that he should be allowed to continue playing. RADIOCITY NEWS: BRINGING THE WORLD CLOSER TO YOU!
