NEWS UPDATES AT 8 O’CLOCK WITH ORANGE. Ministry of Agriculture, Animal industry and fisheries has revealed its skepticism over the installation of UPDF officers to run the Naads programe. The minister for the sector Tress Bucanayandi doubts the army’s sole capability in this programme as it lacks the technical expertise to do so. He also indicated that what is being construed as restructuring would be limited to dropping of Naads coordinators who would be replaced with agricultural extension workers. The minister while officiating the closure of the 22nd edition of the Source of the Nile National agriculture and trade show in Jinja assured farmers of government’s commitment to supporting them through subsidiary components as well as the Naads programme. King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba of Tooro together with the royal family and kingdom subjects have started a week-long fasting as promised earlier in protest to the continued splitting of Tooro by President Museveni. King Oyo wants land and structures in both Rwenzururu kingdom and Obudinghiya bwa Bwamba returned as the 2 cultural institutions once belonged to Tooro Kingdom. The prime minister of the kingdom Steven Kaliba said that Tooro caters for all institutions and tribes in the region and dividing it into small units only causes divisionism and tribal clashes. Such tribal tensions are what have stirred up the recent Rwenzori attacks. The president earlier last month said that it would be a good health choice for the king to fast as it would shape him physically. This prompted demonstrations by Amacumu n’ebitara by’Omukama (the youth of the king of Tooro) in Fort Portal town. The speaker of parliament Rebbeca Kadaga has suggested a creation of an independent ministry for science and technology which could attract more investment for research projects in the country. Uganda has one of the biggest cabinets in the world with about 69 ministers, 375 members of parliament , 133 RDC’s and 66 of their deputies, 75 presidential advisors,43 private presidential advisers and their deputies. The European Parliament is expected to approve the nomination of former Luxembourg PM Jean-Claude Juncker as president of the European Commission, despite strong opposition from Britain. If backed by a majority of MEPs, he will succeed incumbent Jose Manuel Barroso of Portugal in November. Last month, Mr Juncker won the backing of 26 out of 28 leaders of the EU. UK PM David Cameron - supported by his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban - called the move a serious mistake. Mr Cameron said 59, Mr Juncker, was too much in favour of closer political union and might block EU reform. The presidency is the most powerful job in Brussels - the Commission drafts EU laws, oversees national budgets, enforces EU treaties and negotiates international trade deals.
