NEWS UPDATES Govt intends to enhance seafood exports Tuesday, August 26, 2014 INDIA :The head of the Ministry of commerce has committed to propose the central government to consider the possibility of creating a separate department for fisheries and of issuing fishery a seafood export policy to provide a boost to the exporting sector in the country. But she explained that before taking a final decision, it is necessary to perform a thorough analysis in order to assess financial issues as well as others. “All the organisations related to fisheries exports should be brought under one umbrella,” pointed out the minister Nirmala Sitaraman in her visit to the Visakhapatnam fishing harbour, in Andra Pradesh (AP), where she noted a lack of sanitation as it was reported by Times of India. “There is a demand from the aquaculture sector to be treated at par with agriculture for benefits and other concessions. The layers of the industry need to be handled and for that reason we are trying to list complete issues. We will discuss and simplify the excessive regulations that have been hampering growth of trade,” the minster highlighted. Sitaraman promised she would speak to AP chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu on the issue in order to improve conditions at the fishing harbour. Meanwhile, Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) chairman MT Krishna Babu stressed that though sanitation of the fishing harbour comes under the ambit of the fisheries department and the state government, the port is planning to set up a committee of various stakeholders to improve the existing conditions. He also clarified that construction of a fishing harbour at Bheemili would not be possible unless the fishermen expressed their interest in the project. Besides, Babu urged the minister to prevail on Marine Product Export Development Authority (MPEDA) to provide navigation systems for the benefit of the fishing community. MPEDA Chairman Leena Nair said the target of doubling seafood export to USD 10 billion by 2020 was achievable, and called for concerted efforts by all the stakeholders, The Hindu newspaper informed.FIS
