NEWSLETTER FOR JUNE 12th 2014 Hello All Last Thursday, Lou - TopicsExpress

NEWSLETTER FOR JUNE 12th 2014 Hello All Last Thursday, Lou Marriott turned the clubs Wagon Wheel challenge into a Jaffa Cake challenge! Lou gave us the great evening of entertainment that we all knew he would, aided and abeted by his good friend and collaborator Andrew Hardy, whilst another bunch of floor singers provided accomplished support. Bright Season have stepped in to replace Toein in the Dark this week (they will now appear in July). They formed in 2013 bringing together the talents of singer and guitarist Michael J Tinker, fiddle-player Ella Sprung and accordionist Simon Dumpleton. Together they perform traditional and self-penned songs and tunes, displaying their own individual gifts and combining to deliver stunning arrangements and harmonies. Included in their set are traditional ballads such as The House Carpenter, a cappella arrangements of John Ball and the shape-note song Africa and also tune sets drawing on influences from European folk. This is particularly brought to the fore with Ella’s Nyckelharpa. Bright Season have toured around the country, and in addition to playing headline shows they have also supported, among others, Martin Simpson, Fay Hield and the Hurricane Party and Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker. Michael J Tinker has performed and recorded with Damien O’Kane (Kate Rusby band) and Katriona Gilmore and is currently working on a collaborative project with Bella Hardy, Josienne Clarke, The Young’uns, Tom Oakes, Ian Stephenson with a guest track from Jon Boden. In addition he has supported Bellowhead, Lucy Ward, Sam Carter, Maz O’Connor and many more. Ella Sprung is a fiddle player, singer and dancer. She specialises in French, Breton, and Scandinavian folk music, and performs with European folk dance band Trip the Light and folk groups Gallivant and Jack’s Rake. In addition to playing the fiddle she also plays the Swedish Nyckelharpa. Simon is a multi-instrumentalist who has performed with numerous people including Kirsty Bromley and in the ceilidh band Trinculo. He has recently produced recordings for Jess and Richard Arrowsmith, Hekety, Outre Manche and the Melrose Quartet. “…very impressive…a perfect combination.” Now Then Magazine “If ever three musicians were meant together, Bright Season are it. A stunning blend of instruments and voices. Truly mesmerising.” Ant Miles, Downend Folk Club FLOOR SINGERS IN MAY Turn-outs for our club nights in May were generally quite disapointing, however, we still had a wonderful crop of floor singers, some new, some regulars, some from these parts, some from farther afield, to help things rattle along, so my thanks this month go to all of the following people:- Ar Faoued Nick Barnett Richard Benn Robert Bostock Bob Butler Bob Chiswick Roy Derry Simon Ennals Vikki Fielden Albert Hattersley Tim Lewin Andy Murdoch The Repeters Mike Richards Sue Scott-Goldstone & Ian Hudson Kiri Smith Barbara Stewart Cara Stones Les Stovin Johnathan Tilley Kerrie Wells FACEBOOK Please keep clicking the Maybes! If this arrangement falls through I shall certainly go to the list of people who have contacted me enquiring about a booking on that evening. Last time that Harry Bird & the Rubber Wellies appeared at Crookes Folk Club, we were faced with an over-crowded room and some very, perhaps understandably disgruntled people who we had to turn away because there simply wasnt any more space in the room. Faced with the possibility of a repeat this september and in the interests of safety and fairness, I have decided that entry to the club on that night (September 11th) will be advanced booking only, anyone who doesnt have a ticket will not be able to get in - sorry. However, I am determined to keep entry to the club free so there will be no charge. I shall announce nearer to the time exactly how you should obtain your tickets (Ive not worked that bit out yet). TRAMLINES SPECIAL Well, Tramlines is almost upon us once more and Crookes Folk Club is planning its fourth Tramlines Special on the Friday of that weekend (July 25th). As in previous years, we will have 6 acts, each giving us a 25 minute set. This year we are blessed to have appearing (in loosely alphabetical order): The Coles (Tim & Julie) Raymond Greenoaken Magpi Tina McKevitt The Repeters String Theory The evening will begin at 8:00pm prompt and will end at about 11:30, the exact running order is yet to be decided. Entry is free and there will be no raffle or collection, but most guests will be hoping to sell a CD or two, so please come prepared to spend a little. This is part of a whole weekend of Tramlines events at The Princess Royal, kicking off on Thursday the 24th with an extended club night starting with Sheffield City Morris Men performing between 7:30 and 8:15, followed by normal procedings from 8:30 and featuring Johnny Campbell. Our landlady, Jayne, will then take over proceedings on the Saturday with several live guests appearing at the pub. For ALL plugs, please use [email protected] . Gigs and Other Non-Festival Events I dont have the time nor, frankly, the inclination to trawl through Facebook Events, ReverbNation, Stirrings or leaflets looking for things to plug. So, if you would like me to put a line about your up-coming event in the newsletter, then please e-mail me at [email protected] . Ill try to get it in a couple of weeks before-hand, but in order for me to do that, you need to get it to me on the Tuesday of the week that you want it to appear (for instance, for your plug to appear in the Newsletter for January 16th - sent out January 9th to 13th, you will need to get it to me by Tuesday January 7th). Festivals Rather than add these to my THE PLUG section (as I have done hither too) I now have a dedicated section called FESTIVAL PLUGS (clever, eh?) If you are the organiser of a festival and you would like me to give you a mention then you need to e-mail me at [email protected] with the following:- Festival name Dates Location 3 main headline acts OR a brief (no more than 10 words) summary of the nature of the festival (eg song sessions or sea shanties or Wagon Wheel variations). Closing date for early bird ticket sales Contact details, consisting of one or more of: web address, e-mail address, Facebook page, telephone number I shall include the plug for about 3 weeks prior to the closure of early bird ticket sales and then remove it once that date has passed, re-inserting it about 3 weeks before the event. As with all other plugs, you need to e-mail me at said address, I do not have the time, energy or inclination to trawl through leaflets, web pages, Facebook events or newspapers looking for things to include, no e-mail, probably no plug. CDs and Books I now have separate sections to plug CDs and books, but the e-mail address is the same: [email protected] . Ill need the name and contact details for finding out more (1 or more of snail mail, phone, e-mail, WWW or Facebook). I wont keep the plug in forever, but the turnover will be very much dictated by how many I am asked to include, itll be a case of first in, first out. As usual, we are at the Princess Royal, Slinn Street, SHEFFIELD, S10 1NW, doors open at 8:15, for an 8:30 start and there is no charge for entry, just bring a few quid to support the raffle and collection! All singers and musicians are welcome, there is no need to pre-arrange a spot, just try to get there early, so that we have the best chance of giving everyone a fair go. Disclaimer etc: I have tried to ensure that people do not receive more than one copy of this mailing and hope that all who receive it want it. If you have received more than one copy, or do not wish to receive any further ones, please e-mail me with the e-mail address in question and I shall endeavour to avoid any repetition. See you all on Thursday Steve Cooper, Crookes Folk Club
