NEWSLETTER FOR JUNE 26th 2014 Hello All Not everything in this world is black and white, but Magpis are and so is the verdict on that bands appearance at Crookes last Thursday, were they good (white) or were they bad (black)? Well they were whiter than white, they were great. Our collection of floor singers again provided excellent support. So, thank you to all those who gave England the old heave-ho and came along to the club, Im sure that they were far better rewarded than the hoards who watched the game on the telly. Meanwhile, the other England in long trousers have a point to prove with a smaller ball.... Next Thursday, Paul Bell, having completed a national tour of Costa Coffee shops a month or so ago, returns to the club. Warm. Witty. Encouraging. Thought-provoking. Paul Bell is a singer and songwriter who never fails to entertain and inspire. Featured on BBC Radio 2, and championed by BBC Introducing in the East Midlands, he is a seasoned live performer gigging across the UK in pubs, coffee shops, churches and on festival stages. His critically acclaimed latest album Small Town Boy is his most accomplished work to date as Paul turns his keen lyrical eye to what it means to love and be loved in a bottom-line driven culture, and the joy of being four. All delivered with a trademark sense of melody and the odd lyrical curveball thrown in. His acoustic guitar playing and warm vocals will leave you humming his tunes all the way home. He recently undertook a tour of Caffe Nero stores across the UK, and is playing Cornbury Festival amongst others over the summer. Now based in Nottingham Paul lived in Sheffield for 5 years, and returns as often as he can. Find more on his Facebook page: facebook/pages/page/84020145252 or his we page: paulbellmusic/ , you can also tweet him at: twitter/paulbellmusic . Warm, gentle, thoughtful acoustic songs … exquisite lyricism and compelling guitar-based style … this is an outstanding album. - Cross Rhythms (Full review) … witty and knowing without being smug … surely Radio 2 would love this … a James Taylor feel - fairhearing.co.uk (Full review) I had a listen to a couple of tracks … and I liked them so much I bought his album, so this guy is so far the only person to benefit financially in any way from this podcast... ..Obviously a very talented musician, and kind of warmly witty in a sort of Neil Hannon-ish kind of way, and I can imagine some kind of crossover success for Paul in due course – remember where you heard him first, folks. - Mitch Benn, speaking on his podcast (Mitch’s website) COMING DATES June 26 - Paul Bell July 3 - Paula Ryan July 10 - Paul Handyside July 17 - Toein in the Dark (**RE-ARRANGED FROM JUNE 12th**) July 24 - Johnny Campbell and Sheffield City Morris Men (Tramlines warm-up with SCMM display 7:30 to 8:15) July 25 (FRIDAY) - Tramlines Special (No floor singers, 6 acts, 8:00 - 11:30, door 7:45) July 31 - Raintown Seers August 7 - Scanning Horizons August 14 - Chris Sammon & Dave Wilde August 21 - Blackwater August 28 - Chris Scarlett (**CONFIRMED LAST WEEK**) September 4 - Bob Ballard (**PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE**) September 11 - Harry Bird and the Rubber Wellies (FREE tickets in advance only) September 18 - Jan Bell (**PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE**) September 25 - Luke Hirst Please note that Chris Scarlett is now confirmed for August 28th, completing a great summer line-up. Last time that Harry Bird & the Rubber Wellies appeared at Crookes Folk Club, we were faced with an over-crowded room and some very, perhaps understandably disgruntled people who we had to turn away because there simply wasnt any more space in the room. Faced with the possibility of a repeat this september and in the interests of safety and fairness, I have decided that entry to the club on that night (September 11th) will be advanced booking only, anyone who doesnt have a ticket will not be able to get in - sorry. However, I am determined to keep entry to the club free so there will be no charge. I shall announce nearer to the time exactly how you should obtain your tickets (Ive not worked that bit out yet). TRAMLINES SPECIAL Well, Tramlines is almost upon us once more and Crookes Folk Club is planning its fourth Tramlines Special on the Friday of that weekend (July 25th). This is part of a whole weekend of Tramlines events at The Princess Royal, kicking off on Thursday the 24th with an extended club night starting with Sheffield City Morris Men performing between 7:30 and 8:15, followed by normal procedings from 8:30 and featuring Johnny Campbell. For ALL plugs, please use [email protected] . Gigs and Other Non-Festival Events I dont have the time nor, frankly, the inclination to trawl through Facebook Events, ReverbNation, Stirrings or leaflets looking for things to plug. So, if you would like me to put a line about your up-coming event in the newsletter, then please e-mail me at [email protected] . Ill try to get it in a couple of weeks before-hand, but in order for me to do that, you need to get it to me on the Tuesday of the week that you want it to appear (for instance, for your plug to appear in the Newsletter for January 16th - sent out January 9th to 13th, you will need to get it to me by Tuesday January 7th). Festivals Rather than add these to my THE PLUG section (as I have done hither too) I now have a dedicated section called FESTIVAL PLUGS (clever, eh?) If you are the organiser of a festival and you would like me to give you a mention then you need to e-mail me at [email protected] with the following:- Festival name Dates Location 3 main headline acts OR a brief (no more than 10 words) summary of the nature of the festival (eg song sessions or sea shanties or Wagon Wheel variations). Closing date for early bird ticket sales Contact details, consisting of one or more of: web address, e-mail address, Facebook page, telephone number I shall include the plug for about 3 weeks prior to the closure of early bird ticket sales and then remove it once that date has passed, re-inserting it about 3 weeks before the event. As with all other plugs, you need to e-mail me at said address, I do not have the time, energy or inclination to trawl through leaflets, web pages, Facebook events or newspapers looking for things to include, no e-mail, probably no plug. CDs and Books I now have separate sections to plug CDs and books, but the e-mail address is the same: [email protected] . Ill need the name and contact details for finding out more (1 or more of snail mail, phone, e-mail, WWW or Facebook). I wont keep the plug in forever, but the turnover will be very much dictated by how many I am asked to include, itll be a case of first in, first out. As usual, we are at the Princess Royal, Slinn Street, SHEFFIELD, S10 1NW, doors open at 8:15, for an 8:30 start and there is no charge for entry, just bring a few quid to support the raffle and collection! All singers and musicians are welcome, there is no need to pre-arrange a spot, just try to get there early, so that we have the best chance of giving everyone a fair go. Disclaimer etc: I have tried to ensure that people do not receive more than one copy of this mailing and hope that all who receive it want it. If you have received more than one copy, or do not wish to receive any further ones, please e-mail me with the e-mail address in question and I shall endeavour to avoid any repetition. See you all on Thursday Steve Cooper, Crookes Folk Club
