NEWSLETTER FOR NO HIGHRISE YAROOMBA CAMPAIGN Welcome to our fourth newsletter! Most of us have now seen Sekisui’s concept plans for Yaroomba and are quite frankly disturbed at the prospect that such a development is likely to be allowed, IF the Sunshine Coast Council makes amendments to the strategic framework of the new Planning Scheme. This will be voted on by council in December. We have a Mayor who is intent on making these changes, to allow high rise and increased density not only at Yaroomba, but right across the Sunshine Coast. Our role is to convince all the councillors it is not in their interest (or that of the future of the Sunshine Coast) to follow the mayor on this issue. Our challenge now is to engage all the Sunshine Coast in this important issue:TO MAINTAIN THE INTEGRITY OF THE PLANNING SCHEME. The Sunshine Coast is more than just an ATM for developers. We can only achieve this goal with your support. Please continue in your letter writing, communicate your views with all the councillors, engage friends, family, colleagues who live in other areas of the coast, to contact their councillors, and follow more tips in this newsletter. Thankyou for your support. UPDATE: Sekisui’s Community Consultation sessions have commenced. It is imperative that everybody attends and fill out their feedback forms. These forms will be shown to council & will be part of the decision making process to amend the town plan to accommodate high rise. The next session is this Friday 24th October 4-8pm at the Coolum Community Centre. We are expecting a sizable group to attend this session, and instead of queueing up and leaving, we suggest bring the family, dog, a rug or chairs, some food, music and fill out the Sekisui feedback forms at your liesure. We will also be there with our display boards and our survey to fill in, to show council. We would also like groups of people to attend the Sekisui Shopping Centre Sessions, this is where people who know nothing about our fight, will also be filling in the feedback forms,so it is imperative we have people attend. Sekisui’s Communtiy Consultation Sessions are as follows: · 4pm-8pm Friday 24 October 2014, Coolum Community Centre · 27-28th and 1st November, Kawana Shoppingworld · 29th October, Stockland Caloundra · 30, 31st and 1st November, Sunshine Plaza The Sekisui reps will tell you that nothing on the concept plan is is DEFINITE. Everything is just CONCEPT, even the HEIGHT AND DENSITY. What is real is, only one building will be a 5 star resort, whilst 1470 (expect more)apartments will be residential in multiple highrise apartments. (A 250 room 5 Star hotel in the midst of a highrise residential complex, the whole concept is dodgy!) We also know 7-10 storey buildings will be seen clearly from the surrounding areas. Circle of Solidarity postponed until further notice. WHAT ELSE WE ARE DOING? protestmerch has been built for you. This site has information, ideas & photos of signs ready for print. Feel free to print out any sign for car windows, shop windows, laminate for fence signs etc. The prints are also reversed for iron on t-shirt paper. Fence signs are appearing and look great. To make it easy we have ready painted signs on corflute selling for $5.00. We will have them with us on Friday night. We launched helium balloons to the height of the proposed buildings last week and organised people to photograph them from around the ridges, including Neurum Road,Wunnunga Cres, Pt Arkwright, various positions along the beach, in the water and along David Low Way. The results were horrifying showing, the 17 highrise buildings will be clearly visible from afar. View the experiment results in the gallery of protestmerch or our facebook page (Development Watch Inc) A group of graphic artists have put a display board together with posters depicting theREAL facts for us to take to all events . Please contact us if you know of an event where we can take the display for people to view. They will be on show on Friday evening outside the Community centre 4-8.pm. PETITION A link to a change.org petition is also on the protestmerch site. Please also add your thoughts, sign it and leave a comment which will automatically be sent to the mayor, councillors and Sekisui. WHAT YOU CAN DO It’s vitally important for residents from all over the coast to write to the Mayor and all Councillors. PLEASE promote this in anyway you can. The Councillors’ email addresses are on council’s website sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/sitePage.cfm?code=councillor-details. You can say: 1. I do not want any major changes to the planning scheme that would allow more intensive high rise developments on the Sunshine Coast other than what theplanning scheme currently allows; 2. I want Council to stop having secret meetings – I want to know what is being discussed and how councillors are voting? 3. I want to know what amendments are being considered and how they might affect my division.Ask why is the council supporting developers, against community wishes, and attempting to make amendments to the town plan without even a formal development application? “ Sunshine Coast residents can also attend the MEET THE COUNCILLOR sessions, to voice their concerns Following are some upcoming sessions: Cr Peter Cox- Friday 24th October, 9-11am at BFresh Warana Cr Greg Rogerson- Wednesday19th November, 10.30am-12.30pm at Eumundi (opposite Figtree Restaurant in the market Lonergans Lane) Cr Christian Dickson- Friday 21st November, 10am -12nooon, Old Post Office Cr Lindsay Rd and Burnett Street Buderim.
