Resolutions on pay equity at the Liberal Congress The following resolutions were adopted at the Policy Convention of the provincial Liberal Party, April 26: • that a Liberal government improve the methodology used to determine pay equity adjustments, including accurate job descriptions and market-based wage data; • that a Liberal government use procurement and subsidy policies to promote pay equity in the private sector by requiring firms that wish to do business with government to have pay equity established within their firms. Please note that this does not constitute the final election platform, but it is a step in the right direction. The Coalition for Pay Equity is pursuing its efforts so that the Liberal Party and all other political parties undertake and support a law for the private sector. -------------- 2. Pay adjustment for the home support workers The government decided to add a pay equity adjustment for home support workers, bringing the adjustment of the hourly rate for the year 2013-2014 to $0.92 an hour. Furthermore, the Social Development Department will increase the workers’ pay by $0.25 an hour in October 2014. This will not change the adjustments of the pay equity that should reach a total of $2.15 an hour above the annual base wages in 2016-2017. -------------- 3. Election time is coming. Take advantage of it! The provincial election is rapidly approaching, that is September 2014. Ask the candidates in your riding to support pay equity legislation. You can send a message via email, when they go from door to door or if you happen to meet them somewhere. You can also organize a more formal meeting. Mentioning the need for pay equity legislation to the candidates can make a difference since unity is a force to be reckoned with. -------------- 4. Student projects this Summer The Coalition is happy to have three student projects this summer. The following students will work at the Coalitions office for eight weeks: • Cindy Chiasson, Social work student, Masters level, Université de Moncton. • Marie-Gabrielle Gagnon, Law student, Université de Moncton. • Émilie Pelletier, Ocupational Therapy, Université Laval. -------------- 5. Real Life Story… “I work in a grocery store. I am responsible for the cash. I must not make any mistakes. I have to be fast and very polite with the customers. I am on my feet all day bagging groceries and taking care of the cash. It is hard and stressful work especially during the busy periods. However, I happen to earn $2 less an hour than the men who put the merchandise on the shelves. This is not right!” A cashier from your neighborhood… -------------- 6.
